"Sophie!"
I heard the Doctor call my name through the Auto Com in my right ear, he sounded like he was having a panic attack. I have only ever heard him in this state a few times in my life and even then it was a good few years ago even so, the sound of his drastic voice put me back into motion.
"Yes?" I asked nervously.
"You're ok, oh that's good. Listen, I want you to grab a pen from the desk and get ready to draw."
"What are you talking about, Doctor, of course I'm ok; I'm fine. I only saw you ten minuets ago if that, why wouldn't I be fine."
"Oh, young naive Sophie, a lot of things can happen in ten minuets."
I picked up a pen from the desk and slumbered into the leather wheelie chair with a sigh of his lack of logic.
"Ok then, enlighten me Doctor, what could happen in ten minuets and don't patronise me, I maybe young but I am not naïve.
"Sophie, listen to me!" He requested and his voice was argent and serious. "You're not safe, you're far from it! Sophie you're in a heap of danger so I need you to listen carefully and do what I tell you, ok?"
My blood ran cold as the adrenalin pumped through me, making my heart start to bang against my rib cage and my feet stopped still making me stop spinning in the chair – just like old times. I nodded in my head.
"Sophie!"
"Yep, ok."
"Ok, right, don't do it yet but when I say, I want you to look up and tell me what you see while drawing it."
"Draw on what, there's no paper."
"How can an office have no paper?"
"The draw is locked; maybe if you let me use your sonic screw driver once in a while then we wouldn't have this problem-"
"The answer is no, N O!" I rolled my eyes as he cut me off with the same old answer.
"Ok, ok."
I pulled my sleeve up and brought me arm to my eyes, ready to draw whatever the hell he wanted me to."
"Now look up."
I remember looking up, I know for a fact I looked up. But when I blinked my eyes where back to facing forward, like when you shift your body without noticing while blinking and suddenly your surroundings seem like there in a slightly odd angle, that's what it was like.
"Sophie, look at your drawing." The Doctor said through the Auto Com
"But I didn't draw anything." I frowned.
"Trust me."
I looked at my left arm and saw a quick sketch of round heads with no hair that were upside down like bats.
I lifted my chin.
"Don't look." A light voice right inside my ear spoke.
"Why?"
"Because you need to get out now! Those creatures you just forgot are called the silence; they actually have it biologically drilled into them to be forgotten as soon as you look away. There weakness is visual contact, like their always in the shadows, lurking. And that means they can sense when they are being seen – which means you need to get out of there. They are electronic, they will electrocute you until you literally blow like a bulb if they believe you are a threat to expose their existence."
I turned round in the office and then the Doctor was standing right there next to me with his left arm out in front of me and his sonic screw driver in his right, pointed.
Another second went past and we were at the door, side by side, his jacket was itching at my shoulder.
"What was all that about?" I asked as we walked out to the corridor.
"Believe me I wish I knew." The doctor answered as he ruffled his dark hair and we hurried down the hall once again.
