A little boy from the leaf village was always associated with the sand village, because of the gourd of sand he carries around on his back. He had been raised as a kid in the sand but as a ninja he was raised in the leaf.
His father was a dangerous shinobi who was wanted for many things such as practicing forbidden jutsu, specifically forbidden seals.
He used his studies to enclose a demon inside his son during his birth.
His mother died in the process of this sealing and the boy was named after hate. Hate of her husband, hate of her life, and of the first jinjuuriki, the demon.
The mother faded into the darkness of the night and became sand.
The father retreated into the sand as the birth was loud and he was on the run from anbu black ops.
Eventually the boy ran away to the leaf after hearing the story.
