Disclaimer: I own nothing

James Potter sat rubbing his son's back. The child was restless because he had a cold with a slight fever. As he tended to his boy, he thought about how his life had come to this.

James and Lily had survived the war. That fateful Halloween, James had charmed Lily into going out. She had gotten her parents to take care of Harry and Max. When they had gotten back home, they found it caved in with the house on fire. Rushing into the house they found Matthew Evans dead at the foot of the stairs. When they reached the room, Iris Evans was dead in front of the crib that the Potter twins lay in. There was another body, they later found out it was Voldemort. James would never forget the sight of its face. When they inspected the boys, Harry had a scar on his forehead, but Max looked alright.

Lily had blamed James for what had happened.

"If only we had just remained in the house. Gosh you are so damn impulsive and reckless."

"Why did I listen to you?"

"You and your stupid friends..."

She seemed to have forgotten that she went right along with it. It wasn't like she hadn't told him no before.

The arguing progressively became worse. Harry being the exuberant, excited, loud child he was, began to get on his mother's nerves. James remembered the many times he heard her comparing the boys. How Max was so sweet and quiet. How he was just like her. He looked a lot like her: dark red hair and green eyes with her jaw, nose and lips. The only way to tell that boy was a Potter was by his messy hair.

Harry was James' exact replica. Except for his eyes. Those beautiful green eyes lit up like fireworks whenever he laughed.

Before James knew it he and Lily were agreeing to separate. She had taken Max with her. He would miss his son and he hoped Lily would do right by the boy. Although he had heard rumors that she was living with her old friend Snape. James' only consolation was that Snape was getting his seconds. That thought eased his wounded pride.

Harry's whimper brought James out of his brooding. "Hey baby boy," James said kissing the soft baby hair. "Hi sweet boy. I know you don't understand right now, but mama and Max are gone. She was unhappy with us son, but I swear to you baby boy that you have brought nothing but joy and happiness into my life. I have made a lot of mistakes, but I swear I will be a better man if only for you sweet boy."

James couldn't wait to teach his son to ride the big brooms. He couldn't wait for him to get his wand. He couldn't wait to see him play in his first quidditch game. He would be there from the first to last. "I will always be here for you baby boy. You will be everything I'm not: kind, considerate, confidant, and humble. I love you. I promise I do."

Just a small thing I thought about. Don't know if I should continue. Reviews are welcome
