Nick Fury launched a covert assault on the leadership of Latveria, who were plotting a
massive attack on America, using a small team of heroes consisting of Captain America,
Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Wolverine, Daredevil and the Black Widow. One year after the
assault, the Latverian forces launched a counter-attack, which resulted in Luke Cage
being hospitalized, Fury's friendship with Captain America became strained, and Fury
was removed as S.H.I.E.L.D. commander and forced into hiding, with numerous
international warrants out for his arrest. Soon after The Hulk had destroyed the city of Las Vegas and was exiled into space where he would endure a hell no one could ever
imagine. Then, Stamford, Connecticut was destroyed during a televised fight between the
New Warriors and a group of dangerous villains, a federal superman registration act was
passed. All individuals possessing paranormal abilities must now register with the
government. Splitting the Superhero community in two began a Civil War between the
powers. Now the war is over. Steve Rogers, Captain America has been assassinated and
Tony Stark, Iron Man has been appointed Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., the international
peacekeeping force. He has now set into motion The Initiative, a plan for training and
policing super heroes in this brave new world intended to position a local super hero
team in each state of the U.S. All is right with the world again, The super heroes are
fighting the bad guys and not each other. The Hulk is in space, never to return and ever
harm a soul. And Nick Fury is still in hiding, untraceable by anyone.
"Hey Nick. You called?" says a young man who is standing behind Nick Fury.
"Got a job for you kids." He grunts.
"Finally! We've been cooped up since Latveria and we had to watch the whole civil war massacre take place and not lift a finger."
"Cuz I didn't want you kids involved!"
"Yet you let Bucky and look at him. Fell off the grid since they killed Cap, which we could've stopped, after God knows what!"
"You doing the mission or not?" Fury asks calmly.
"Of course."
"Good, cuz I need you to round up the team."
"Everyone?"
"Except Dawn 'til I say otherwise. S.H.I.E.L.D. has her under a watchful eye, but we will need her later. I just don't want to attract any attention just yet."
"Okay. But what about me? I'm in the Army. Can't jus' pack up an' quit."
"I've already sent orders to your special forces unit for your assistance. You'll be fine."
"Sweet. So what's the mission Colonel?"
"Heh."
