She was standing in Genkai's garden, caressing the Jacob's Ladder roses he planted there three years back, the fiery coral shades of the silken petals stark against her pale hands. She looked alone, forsaken even. So beautiful in a sorrow he was sure she wasn't aware she was exuding. He wanted so badly to go out there and hold her close. He wanted to be the rose she was solemnly touching. She could only be thinking about the koorimie and her long, "lost" brother standing there.
He suddenly rubbed a nervous hand through trembling, red locks before he went to the open window. Kurama's cough caught Yukina by surprise, her long turquoise hair somehow coming undone with the quick, jerking movement of her turning around to face him, her hands dropping away from the roses. He watched the surprise and the remnants of sadness and loneliness, fade from her face , leaving an emotionless mask behind.
"Would you like some tea, Yukina-san?"
"Yes, please, Kurama-san." She answered his query with polite distance...
He instinctively knew she didn't like being caught in unaware, in a moment of rising emotion. Her eyes flickered with a small glint of that steel he often glimpsed in Hiei's crimson eyes. They were definitely siblings, somehow connected.
And he'd never be able to embrace her, so that she would know she wasn't alone. Not when her heart was so cold and made of the stone that comprised his own. Not when her brother was Hiei...
"Kurama-san? Do you know what it feels like to be...alone?"
He shook his head in the negative, even though he certainly did know as the infamous youko of old.
"I have loved ones who care for me. How can I be alone if even one person cares?" A question with a question. Omission of the truth, evasion one of his tactics...he was so damned good with lying, with strategy.
"You are wise. I am not alone then." But somehow he knew she was lying too.
They were both good at it. They were more alike than she could ever imagine.
