In the darkest reaches of the night, they came, crawling, creeping into every crevice, burrowing deeply, seeking out that hidden within. Finding that which they sought, they settled firmly in to wait, to prepare, and grow into readiness. They would sense when the time was right for each to emerge, these secret demons:

Arrogance and Anger -- Desire, Jealousy, and Hate -- Violence, Revenge -- Pride -- Pain -- and, greatest of all, Fear.

Fear remained closest to the surface, the least hidden, easily detected, kept at bay by Compassion. However, even Compassion could not long withstand assault from the demons within, as each struggled to burst forth. Desire crept quietly around and out, disguised as Love. The trickle began then, and the crack in the inner wall widened with the pressure of the flow, until the ravening hordes overran the defenses and emerged triumphant, Fear riding command. Love fought fiercely, attempting to defend and conquer, but the demons fed on the emotional turmoil and grew in Power

Arrogance and Jealousy united against Love, beating it down, until Love surrendered in defeat, unable to compete with the demons that now controlled this Being. And Love having lost, Compassion withdrew cautiously into a deep and secret crevice to rebuild its own Power. And wait. Like the demons, it was patient; it was resilient; it had time. For Compassion was Unconditional Love and was the Essence of Life. In the end, the demons would lose this Being also into that Essence.

And in the darkest reaches of the night, they would seek Another.
