I wrote this in about 15 minutes just then, while listening to Asleep by The Smiths and thinking about the DE in-bed scene. If there is anything that needs changing/editting, let me know.

Elena had grown accustomed to finding Damon in her bedroom of a night time. The summer just gone had featured many nights when Damon would appear in her room, fill her in on the ever unsuccessful chase for Stefan and then walk out of her bedroom door to relay the same(though more graphic, Elena had learnt when she'd resorted to eavesdropping) story.

Though she wouldn't admit it, she was expecting Damon to be in her bedroom tonight - she expected him most nights. Him lounging out on her bed, though, she hadn't expected. She wasn't shocked, it takes a lot more than a flirty vampire in her bed to shock her these days, but she was surprised none the less. Damon usually steered clear of her bed. It was like he recognised the bed as place belonging to Elena(and dare he say it, Stefan.

That thought was gone now. Though there was no doubting Stefan and Elena loved each other still, they were no longer in love It was appoint Damon didn't even consider celebrating. How could he be happy about something that caused Elena to be so sad? But he did take it as an opening to lie on Elena's bed, which he did with a smirk.

While Elena was trying to get Damon off of her bed, a thought came to her. She didn't really mind the raven-haired vampire was taking half of her bed up. She only needed one half anyway. With that thought she gave up and crawled into the bed next to him. She trusted Damon more than anyone at that moment, and trusted that he wouldn't get up to anything in the bed with her. Not that he would resort to that. Not with Elena.

As they spoke about Stefan and about Rebekah, Elena's ever strong wall began to crumble(a rare occurrence), and so did Damon's(even rarer). Elena rolled over and her eyes met Damon's, and in that moment she knew that she didn't mind having Damon in the same bed as her. She was grateful for him being there.

Elena turned off her lamp and rolled back over, the loss of light washing a quietness over them. Now they whispered to each other the most emotional words of the night. Elena's eyes wandered over Damon's face as she spoke of his brother, admiring the way his eyes were full of love(for his brother and, although she didn't realise, her). His eyes were fixed on hers, admiring the way the woman he was so in love with understood him so well.

When their eyes met, the words they couldn't say (I love you, I love you too) were transferred unintentionally. They didn't need to talk now, anything that could be said could not wait until morning. Not that any words could compare to the looks they shared.

Elena let her heavy eyes close, but she didn't fall asleep straight away. Her brain and her heart were too busy contemplating about the man next to her, and how she didn't want him to leave. How she wanted someone(him) to wake up to.

She fell asleep with one thought running through her mind, that if she fell asleep she knew that Damon would be there in the morning.
