When We First Met
Hayate looked around him, he was alone. He'd made sure that he hadn't been followed, he was truly and completely alone.
As the realization that no one was coming for him came, he allowed himself a moment of weakness and collapsed to his knees, his hands fisted as he hit the ground repeatedly. "No! Why? Why did..?" He remembered Takako telling him that for him, she'd become the Princess of Disaster. He remembered how three of his closest friends, the Leafe Knights of Water, Ice, and Plants, had given all they had to seal her. He remembered... he remembered.
He didn't know how long he'd been there, in that clearing in the woods. Had it been hours? Days? Weeks? He didn't know. Knights didn't age physically once they hit 17. They didn't need sleep or food thanks to the Leafe. Technically, Knights could freeze themselves in time until they were needed...
As he decided to freeze himself, seeing how it was all his fault that Takako had betrayed them, he heard a noise coming from the underbrush. Seconds later, a little toddler with pinkish-brown hair and soulful, happy, open eyes looked up at him and smiled. Hayate couldn't help himself: he smiled back.
The little girl tottered to her feet, then reached for the still kneeling and hunched over Hayate. She caught him around the neck, and his arms instinctively went around her, returning the hug. She giggled and, leaning up, kissed his cheek before nuzzling into his shoulder and muttering sleepily, " 'Ts...O...K..."
A couple of hours passed as Hayate looked at the sleeping girl in his arms. A gentle smile crossed his face as he swore to make her return to where she was from. He knew that someone had to be searching for her, so he picked her up and flew with her in his arms to where a search party that was anxiously calling for "Himeno".
Knowing that he'd been gone for too long from Leafenia, Hayate put Himeno down in clear sight of the search party and called them over. He turned away from her, promising her that someday, they'd meet again. The pretty toddler Himeno only murmured in her sleep. He smiled as he gave himself to the wins. He was sure they'd meet again. After all, how many toddlers can restore a Leafe Knight's Leafe in their sleep?
Thirteen years later, Hayate worked with Himeno for the first time, but as she became the Pretear of Wind, he gained momentary access to her memories. The first thing he saw in her memories was the one night that he had saved her and her thought. "Hayate? It was you..."
