When she was six years old, she desperately wanted a pokémon. She watched all the TV shows about training and constantly tried to talk her parents into getting her a little friend. They rarely listened to her since they were often busy with work and arguing, so she decided to get a pokémon by herself.
It was actually quite easy to steal one. Her dad had many trainer friends who visited all the time, so she only had to pick the right time to take a pokéball out of someone's purse or pocket. A piece of cake.
When she finally acquired one of those little red and white balls, she ran to the beach to let her new pet out.
She was young, inexperienced, and didn't know that the pokémon she stole would not be amused by the new trainer and would attack the little helpless girl.
That was when she discovered that she definitely wasn't a fan of psychics.
Fortunately, the owner of the stolen monster and her dad found them before any serious damage was done.
She got her first legal pokémon, a little shinx, when she was six years old. It, or rather he, was a gift from her father. He was something to remember her dad by when she moved far, far away with her mom.
She named the little ball of electric fluff Bart. He didn't like the name, but there was absolutely no way for him to voice his opinion.
She treated him like any little girl would treat a cute feline. She spoiled him rotten, gave him expensive foods and tried to train him for years. Naturally, she took him wherever she went.
He was the closest thing she had to a best friend.
And then she let him go
She was only ten years old when she made that decision. Adult people in white suits told her that pokémon should be free, and adults were always right, at least that's what her mom always told her.
Besides, if you love something, you should let it go, right?
He was released over a PC because shinx weren't native to her region. That meant no good byes, no turning back. No ways of finding him again. She will always remember the trembling of her fingers while she pressed the "Yes" button, the look of betrayal that she could imagine on Bart's face.
She never allowed herself to cry, but that one time she slipped. And no one noticed.
Later she found out that the people in white suits weren't right, that pokémon should stay with their trainers, that not all adults are the good guys.
Of course, it was too late.
Few years later she decided to get a new pokémon and move back to her home region. She started her training journey and collected both pokémon and gym badges, like all the little trainers do.
She even had a traveling buddy. He was quite annoying, but he had serious training skills. She always felt safe around him, but that was because his whole team was dark and psychics couldn't hurt him.
The duo traveled across the Johto and Kanto island, and even went against the Elite Four together. She was beaten to ground in the first room while he lasted until Bruno defeated his whole team with only one pokémon. It wasn't one of their brightest moments, but they at least had some fun.
And then it all went south.
Another villainous team decided that they were strong enough, good enough, to take down all the big guys in the world. Like all the others, they tried to use a legendary and beat everyone with it. Of course, the role of defending the world fell on another kid.
Fortunately, it wasn't her.
Unfortunately, the would-be-savior took her down with him.
Even more unfortunately, a revolution was started.
