Some say love is a game.

But what happens when the game becomes more important than love and life itself?

Eight-year-old Dylan and Derrick are two outcast children whose lives change forever on the day that they meet. Together, they invent an outrageous game of "Dare" to keep their spirits alive. Derrick's Mother is dying, Dylan's Father is no where to be seen, and upon her death-bed Derrick's Mother entrusts him with her most treasured possession: her Grandmother's necklace. A simple gold chain, with a single star pendant hanging from it. However, this one necklace is anything but simple - Derrick sees Dylan being picked on in class one day, and he understands that when you have nothing to give, you have to share everything you've got.

"Here, when you feel better you can give it back.
We'll share."

Dylan frowned at these words, staring across at the boy who was holding out a gold necklace to her, gentle smile secured in place. She thought he was just like all the others - this was a game, and he was toying with her.

"Why? Why give me something only to take it back?
Prove you mean it."

Derrick's eyes narrowed for the fraction of a second, watching as the girl snatched the necklace from him. He followed her gaze to the class pet - a goldfish who the teacher had a weird obsession with. No one dared ever touch it.

"Game?"

He hesitated.

"Game."

Just like that, the eight-year-old swiftly darted towards the teacher's desk and effortlessly knocked it from the table, watching as the bowl smashed to the ground and shattered into a thousand pieces. The teacher was mortified, but Dylan grinned.

"There. Now that you feel better,
it's my turn."

AND THUS, THE GAMES BEGIN.

As they grow older, the game becomes a glorious addiction and the dares became more and more dangerous. Both teenagers would take it in turns to 'own' the necklace, and the current owner would dare the other to carry out a forfeit in order to win the prized necklace back. It was sick, and sometimes twisted, but it had now become a part of their lives - just as Derrick had fallen into the position of Dylan's older brother, and she had become his security. If it weren't for her, he would have to cope alone with his Father (a raging alcoholic), and if it weren't for Derrick? She'd have no where to call home.

But the games are getting worse. They are beginning to go far beyond being simple 'Child games', much to an extent in which it's taking over their lives. She'll dare him to skip his exam - he'll reply by telling her to break up with her boyfriend. He'll make her run away from home for a week, she'll dare him to steal so-and-so's virginity. How long will it take before they realise the damage their causing for the people around them?
→ How long before they see the destruction their causing to themselves?
