Ed remembered the best day of his life being on the other side of the gate. Well, the best since he had discovered Alphonse stowed away on the ship on the way back from Amestris; because while he wanted his brother to stay in Amestris and close the gate, to be happy, he had prepared himself for never seeing his little brother again, and had even teared up a bit as he entered the gate to go back to the other world.

But the best day of his life on the other side of the gate was when he met her.

Her hair was still long and blonde, though instead of having multiple earing holes in one ear, she only had one ear pierced. It was a small silver ring, much like the one she had back in Amestris. In this world, she wore more makeup. He had never seen her apply makeup in Amestris.

When he first saw her, she was standing outside a prosthetics shop. Of course Ed knew these places existed in this world, as he had to go for check-ups at them, though knew they just weren't the same as automail. He approached her only because he wasn't thinking. He had expected her to smile at him, wrap her arms around him, and be grateful he was home in one piece.

But he wasn't home, and she wasn't her. This wasn't the same, and Edward couldn't be happy with her like he wanted to be back in Amestris. He couldn't even imagine what she was doing right now. Was she happy? Was she married to someone and having babies? He didn't even know. His thoughts were interrupted by her speaking.

"Edward? Is that you?" she asked suddenly. His eyes widened. He wondered if she recognized him. Maybe this version of her had memories of him from Amestris. "Edward Heidrich! I can't believe you're here, I haven't seen you in ages!" she called out. Ed sighed. She didn't remember him at all. She remembered the teenager Ed had posessed his first time through the gate, and that had died just before he was returned home.

"Oh, I'm not..." Ed trailed off. "My name's Edward Elric; you must have me confused for Alfonse Heidrich's brother; we look a lot alike," he explained to her.

"Oh, I'm so sorry," she apologized. "My name's Winry; Winry Rothstein."

"Hi, Winry."

I know this is short, but I thought it was sweet :) R&R
