Crumbling

"I love you," he whispered softly into her ear, before dragging his lips over to her mouth.

She returned the words after pulling back from the kiss. "I love you, too."

His arms immediately pulled her into the softest hug she had ever felt. The storm was coming, but she felt safe in his arms. She could feel a feeling in the pit of her stomach telling her that everything she thought wasn't true. There's no way Toby Cavanaugh could be the person she was suspecting him to be. How could this gentle figure be the one tormenting her? She felt assured that it was all a mistake, and she was going to prove herself correct tonight.

With that, Toby picked his backpack up and waved at her before heading off for his final hours of work.

The moment of truth was coming sooner, and Spencer's heart was racing faster as the clock ticked.

Her phone started ringing. Incoming call from Toby Cavanaugh. Her thumb gently tapped the 'Answer' button, and she brought her phone to her ear.

"Hey. How's the dinner?" Toby asked.

"Boring... but it's moving along," Spencer said, trying to make sure he couldn't heart the nervousness in her voice.

"That's good. I hope we can celebrate tomorrow," he told her.

She wished the same. She wished to be in his arms tomorrow, feeling the same way about him as she did when she fell in love with those blue eyes. All she hoped for right now was that nothing changed. She still wanted to look into those blue eyes and see the good-hearted person she was in love with.

"I do, too. Are you still at work?" she asked.

"No," he said. "I got off work early because of the storm."

"Will you do me a favor and call me when you get back to your loft?" she asked.

"Of course," he responded. "I love you."

"I love you, too," she said, hoping that the three words he said were true. Tonight she was going to find out if they were really true. "Stay safe, Toby."

"Will do," he said before hanging up.

She saw a black car pull up in her driveway. She wasn't expecting a call from him, and she was right- she didn't get one. Her heart was aching. It could be true. Only Toby knew where she had put the key. It was him, wasn't it? Her faith in him was dying as seconds passed...

Maybe she was wrong. Maybe it wasn't true. She was hoping for nothing more than the person in that hoodie to not be her boyfriend.

When the black hoodie entered her kitchen and went to the drawer, she knew it was him. But she had one last speck of hope- one speck of faith, telling her that the person who turned around would not be Toby Cavanaugh.

She slowly took her steps into her kitchen, her heart racing faster than ever.

"Is this what you're looking for?" she asked, pain in her voice.

She had a feeling it was Toby who would turn around.

And as soon as the figure turned around, she knew that nothing would ever be the same again. She knew everything in her life was damaged, and everything was lost. She knew she was broken... She knew she would begin crumbling.
