LucidAftermath

Authored by: Cassandra Cartagena

Empyrean, a world that was deemed as the vault to heaven, was once ruled by Summoners with the power to manipulate their surroundings when they close their eyes and 'dream', who are now a near forgotten race. Following the fallout of the great Summoner War, the sky began to fall as the ground started to crack.

This story is about a young woman named Verdani, who is the reincarnation of an original Summoner with the power of Absolute Order, and her fight to stop a race between the ground and the sky from colliding into one.

Lucid Dreaming has never felt so real.

Prologue

Ineffable, and near intangible, I rub my eyes in torment to chase after the ember-like phosphenes that leads me to the personified iridescence that was the epoch of my limerence. Incandescent eyes with a desire to burn, his smile is a flame that scorches rationality away, wilting it one petal at a time. Happiness was but an ephemeral epiphany. It is as though the austere four walls of a confinement, dubbed as our home, was merely a childhood fabrication that held no consequence or recourse beyond the ignition of a flickering whirlwind; mellifluous in nature, nefarious in resolve.

As the petrichor permeates my senses from the reality that I have abandoned, I devour the luminescent flames and watch as it consumes what once was flesh, bone, and then finally ash, until all that is left is a dark hooded drape adorning my body, stitched together by the lives of all those lost and the hope of the remaining few.

The land and the sky were in decay, and all I wished for were that I become the drops of dew, replenishing the burnt remains in his wake, instead of the source that feeds his endless flame. That last dream-encased memory, the last summer, already lost. The guarding warmth and sweet aroma, with a stench only a dragon-like phoenix, with wings blazing alit in a desolate sky, could ever love. Gently, as I sleep, my senses come alive as his words ring sonorously, reverberating within the very essence of my being.

"War was inevitable."
