"Sam, we're definitely lost."
"We're not lost."
Sam and Quinn had been wandering through the woods for hours now and Sam, as many men do, refused to admit that they were lost.
"Yeah? Then where are we?"
Sam is silent. All he had wanted to do was take Quinn on a cute, romantic hiking date. He had even packed a cute picnic lunch in one of those old-fashioned baskets. Quinn was now sitting on the ground against a tree and nibbling on the chocolate-covered strawberries.
"Quinn, come on. Give me five more minutes and I swear we'll find the spot."
Quinn rolls her eyes. "Sit down, Sam."
Sam hesitates before giving up and sitting beside Quinn. He nuzzles his head into her neck while she eats and and places a soft kiss there. "I'm sorry this day was a total bust," he says.
"It wasn't that bad," Quinn answers. "Here, let's eat."
She opens up the basket and spreads Sam's meal out on a blanket before lying down on her stomach and digging in. Sam lies beside her and grabs a sandwich.
They joke around as they eat and Sam smiles every now and then as he notices Quinn twirling the ring that he bought her around her finger. He loved every memory that came along with that ring.
"I feel like this day really sucked. I wanted it to be perfect and romantic and everything," Sam says. The last thing he wanted to do was let Quinn down.
"Sam, I'm telling you it wasn't bad at all. I got to spend the day with the guy that I love—"
"Wait," Sam says suddenly, his head snapping up to look at his girlfriend. "The guy that you what?"
Quinn's face was reddening. "I just meant—"
Sam cut her off with a passionate kiss. "I love you so much, Quinn Fabray."
Quinn just nods because she's stubborn and she doesn't want to admit that she's desperately in love with Sam Evans and she has been for quite some time.
"You love me, Quinn," Sam says, because he needs to hear her say it.
"Shut up," she says, blushing again.
"You love me," he says peppering kisses around her face, purposely avoiding her lips. "Say it."
"No," she says, crossing her arms.
"You know you want to," Sam says, moving his lips to her neck. "Just say it."
"Sam, you're being ridiculous."
"Say it," he presses their noses together so that the words are whispered against her lips and she closes her eyes.
"I love you," she says quietly. He smiles as he plants a kiss on her mouth.
"Was that so hard?" he asks, kissing her neck again.
"Yes," she says, still being stubborn.
"But you're going to say it again, aren't you?" he asks.
"If you're lucky," she says, a smile threatening to play across her lips. She's trying to fight it.
"Believe me," he says, placing his head in her lap. "I am."
They lie there for a while and just enjoy each other before they finally decide to find their way out of this woods. Sam is packing up their picnic when Quinn stands up and notices something.
"Sam, you're an idiot."
Sam looks at her. "That's funny because like half an hour ago you were talking about how much you looove me."
"Sam, the road is right there."
Sam turns around and looks beyond their tree to see a car zoom past. "You have got to be kidding me," he says. "It was right there the entire time."
Quinn laughs at her boyfriend and kisses him on the cheek. "I still love you, I promise."
It was good that the road was right there, though, because in the many years to come, the couple found themselves going back to this spot. He proposed to her there exactly two years later and when they had kids, Sam and Quinn brought them there for picnics every once in a while. Their kids had heard the stories about a thousand times and they had come to dread those trips to the tree, because they knew it meant they had to hear those stories. But Sam loved those trips, because he loved looking over at his wife and remembering the day that he finally won the heart of the most beautiful girl he'd ever seen.
Fin.
