SUMMARY: Carter comforts Dave when he loses a loved one

"Nooo! Not like this, please! Come on, Carter, isn't there anything else you can do?" a tearful Dave Malucci pleaded with an exhausted John Carter.

Carter wiped a weary hand across his sweaty face. "I'm sorry, Dave, we've done all we can do. She was just too old."

"Noo," Dave whined as he fell to his knees with his head in his hands. "If only I'd paid more attention and took better care of her. If only ..."

"Dave, you can't beat yourself up about this. It was only a matter of time before she died. You spent a lot of time with her and that's what you should cherish. God giveth and he taketh away."

"Oh, easy for you to say. One of yours can die and you wouldn't think twice. She's been with me for years, always there to cheer me up. And now-and now she's Gone!" he said before he started crying again.

"Come on, Dave, I know what can cheer you up."

"Nothing can ever cheer me up. I've been with her since college. She's been with me through thick and thin, man."

"Want an ice cream sundae?"

"Ice cream? Dude, I just lost a loved one and you're suggesting ice cream? Ice cream can't ease the pain of losing a loved one. Not even a beer can ease this. Not even Sex!"

"Final offer."

Dave looked back at his beloved then back at Carter. "You buying?"

"Of course."

"Deal. But you ain't getting my cherry," Dave said before getting his coat.

Carter walked to the door and held it open for Dave to make sure he followed. Dave looked back and silently said goodbye before exiting with Carter.

Inside the small apartment lay an equally small television set, still fizzling from the poking and prodding it had received, too little, too late.

Fin.

Note: Yep, you guessed it (or not). My TV crapped out on me today. :( I have to ask a friend to tape ER tomorrow night. Sniffle...
