I own nothing except what I own.

Jack watched Anamaria coaching his wife. He was scared, but not terribly. He had been with Elizabeth through this experience once already, so he wasn't nearly as frightened. It still hurt him to see her in so much pain though. Anamaria smiled at him reassuringly. She was large with child herself, and in a month Elizabeth would be returning this favor. Elizabeth groaned and gripped Jack's hand hard as a pain dragged her down into a pit of agony. He gritted his teeth. She had a hard grip.

As the pain eased, Elizabeth frowned at her huge belly. She hadn't been near this large with Willy. It worried her a little. Was this baby a giant, or had she been overeating? The baby's patterns of movement had been strange as well. The little one often seemed to be spreading its legs in different directions so as to be kicking both sides of the womb at once. She groaned as another pain hit. Anamaria was staring at Elizabeth's stomach as well. She poked and prodded a bit, then smiled. Elizabeth groaned and spoke through gritted teeth. "Ana, why are you smiling?" "You'll find out soon enough."

It was about another half hour before Anamaria announced she could see the head. After two more agonizing pushes, Anamaria smiled in delight as she picked up the slippery baby. "It's a boy!" She wrapped the baby up without washing him and handed him to Jack, who nearly fainted with fear of dropping his son. "Ana, why can't you hold him?" "Because I have to help Elizabeth. Don't you want the other one?" "What!" Just then, Elizabeth groaned, and Anamaria hurried to her side, instructing her to push. "Ana, what's happening?" "Why, you're having twins of course!" Elizabeth's eyes widened, and Jack sat down hard in a chair by the bed, staring at the child he held, then back at Elizabeth's still round belly. Five minutes later, another newborn squawked, and Anamaria's smile was huge. "This one's a girl! Congratulations!"

She took the crying newborn from Jack, and, balancing a baby on each arm, took them to the wash basin. Jack knelt on the floor next to the bed, holding Elizabeth's hand. She was crying; tears of exhaustion and joy spilling down his face, and there were tears in Jack's eyes too. He kissed her softly. "Thank you, Lizzie-luv. Thank you for these little symbols of love." As he spoke, Anamaria placed the babies in Elizabeth's arms.

Jack and Elizabeth stared at their children with delight. The girl seemed to have Jack's eyes, while the boy's were a lighter shade more like Elizabeth's. Elizabeth spoke softly as she guided the babies to her breasts. "You pick the first name for the girl, I'll pick for the boy, and then we'll switch on the middle names." He looked at the little girl. "I knew a girl once, a little girl, not one of the ones I was interested in, who died when she was twelve. She was the daughter of a friend of mine, and I always loved her name. Nicole." "That's a lovely name. I think this fellow should have a name that compliments hers. Nicholas sounds good, don't you think? Nicole and Nicholas." Jack nodded. "Sounds perfect." "Now, her middle name should be…Oh I don't know, you name her." "Why don't we just have their middle names be our firsts? Nicole Elizabeth and Nicholas Jack." "Good! Aren't they adorable, Jack?" He looked down at Elizabeth and the babies in her arms. "They're wonderful."
