Here's my Watari Birthday story.

Sorry it sucks so badly.

I'm currently stressing about my own birthday (April 25th!)

Disclaimer: I is no owning the Yami no Matsuei-ness

He was bored.

Normally, being bored wasn't a very big deal, as, usually, he could concoct a potion and terrorize his office mates.

But he couldn't—not today.

Today, he had to behave.

Watari didn't know exactly why he had to behave, but he didn't want to upset people when they were thinking of gifts.

So he sat in his laboratory and thought.

The scientist was fifty-five, but had the body of a twenty-three-year-old.

Not that he was complaining that he hadn't aged.

Wrinkles and flabby skin just weren't sexy.

For the past week, people had been asking him what he wanted.

"Oh, something fun!" Watari would reply cheerfully, "Something exciting!"

What he really wanted was generally not considered to be fun or exciting.

No, what he wanted was generally considered to be sadistic. It was even said that what he wanted did not have blood, but instead had concentrated acid running though his veins.

Watari knew for a fact that Tatsumi did not have concentrated acid for blood.

But only because he had witnessed one of the man's less-than-graceful moments, in which he had gotten a paper cut.

Tatsumi's blood hadn't disintegrated the paper, so it had to be blood.

Watari looked around his lab.

In celebration of his birthday, Saya and Yuma had sneaked into the office early and decorated it for him. Somehow, they had decided that gold and blue were good colors for the décor.

I wonder if Bon told them. Watari said to himself. I'm sure he knows how I feel for Seii.

He prayed the Hokkaido girls didn't know about his little crush.

If they did, it'd be around the office in an instant, and I just can't have that happen.

He sighed.

At least he hadn't gotten an assignment on his birthday.

That wouldn't have been any fun at all… well… unless he was paired up with Tatsumi again.

Although he and the secretary had done well at the Kurosaki estate, he wished they could have been in a situation where emotions weren't running rampant.

Watari shook himself mentally. He didn't want to think about the Kurosaki family right now. They were too…

He searched for a word, but none seemed to come.

Oh, well… At least it's all solved, now.

Watari was interrupted from his thoughts by a knock at the door.

He looked up.

"Yes?"

Tsuzuki and Bon walked in.

"Hi, Watari!" Tsuzuki said, happily. "We have a gift for you!"

Watari smiled. "Okay. Where is it?"

Tsuzuki scuffed a shoe on the floor. "Uhmm… well… We didn't have the money to give it to you…"

A golden eyebrow quirked.

"But—But we asked Tatsumi and he said he would get it!"

"I'm a little confused, Tsuzuki…"

Hisoka spoke up. "What he's trying to say is that we wanted to get you a nice lunch for your birthday, but, with all the pay cuts we receive from Tsuzuki's eating habits, we had to ask Tatsumi to get it for you."

"You asked Tatsumi to take me out to lunch? And he said yes!?"

Tsuzuki smiled. "It's not a date. We know you wouldn't want to go out with our beloved little secretary."

Watari didn't miss the mischievous glint in Tsuzuki's eyes.

His smile grew wider. "Thanks."

"Aw. It's nothing. Besides, you really should be thanking Tatsumi. He's paying for this."

Watari stood and pulled on his lab coat. "I will."

He hugged Tsuzuki, ruffled Hisoka's hair affectionately (for which he received a glare), and left the lab.

Lunch with Tatsumi?

Maybe this birthday wouldn't be so bad, after all.
