The day had been a relatively normal day for Weiss. She went to classes with her team, spent some time studying alone, and then spent some time hanging out with her teammates. Nothing extraordinary happened, other than her chance to beat Cardin in Professor Goodwitch's class. As it stood though, she had a test the following day in Doctor Oobleck's class and she felt a need to do a little bit of extra studying. It was while she was doing this extra study session that she realized something was wrong.

Ruby, the adorable leader of team RWBY, who slept in a bunk bed above Weiss, was shaking in her sleep. Weiss wasn't sure how long she took to notice the sound of Ruby quivering in her sleep, but when she did, she couldn't ignore it. The white-haired heiress put her books away, stood up, and pulled herself up to a level where she could look at Ruby. What she saw was the young team leader with the red-tipped brown hair, curled into a ball, and shivering violently. Worried that Ruby might be having a nightmare, Weiss reached out and shook the smaller girl gently.

Two bright silver eyes shot open almost immediately and locked onto Weiss' own blue eyes. In the few seconds she had to look at her team leader's face, Weiss was able to make out fear and relief on the younger girl's face, though the heiress' thoughts were cut off when Ruby moved forward and hugged her. It was then that Weiss realized that Ruby was still shaking, just less so than when she was asleep. She responded to Ruby's hug by wrapping her arms around the younger girl and hugging back.

The two girls stayed like that for several minutes before either of them moved, and it was Weiss who did so first. The problem was that she couldn't bring herself to leave Ruby, so she did the only thing she could think of. She gently lifted the young team leader off of the top bunk, holding her close to her chest, and carefully placed her on Weiss' own bunk. She then snuggled down next to Ruby and pulled the younger girl into another hug. Weiss felt Ruby's small arms wrap around her again at the same time that she felt Ruby's head pressing gently into her shoulder.

"It's okay, Ruby," Weiss said softly. "I'll protect you from whatever it is that's out to hurt you. You can rest peacefully now."

The words struck a chord in Ruby. She had always felt safe in Weiss' arms, as small and soft as they were, but now was whole different story. She felt as if Weiss had somehow build a fortress around the two of them. A fortress so well fortified that nothing could possibly get to them. The younger girl stopped shaking almost immediately as the images from her nightmare faded into nothing. The red-tipped brunette wanted to thank Weiss. She wanted so badly to be able to explain all that the heiress had done for her and just how much love she had for her partner. Unfortunately, at the moment she couldn't even bring herself to make a sound, let alone speak. So she settled for nuzzling into Weiss. However, with her fears chased away, and the person she adored the most guarding her, the pull of sleep soon became too much to resist again and the silver-eyed girl fell asleep.

Weiss, despite being in a less than comfortable position, didn't move. She held her most trusted friend and partner in a gentle hug for the rest of the night, doing her best to keep the younger girl comfortable. Weiss had no idea what the nightmare Ruby had had was about, but she knew that Ruby, more than anyone, deserved a good night's sleep after all of the stuff she had been through recently.

"I don't know how you ended up with my heart, but somehow you did, and I don't mind that one bit," the white-haired heiress said softly. Mere seconds later, she too fell asleep somehow feeling more comfortable than her position should allow.
