Average
Mirai always wonders what it would be like to lead a normal life.
The main reason for this thought came from her curse. Often times she would find herself staring at her hand, at the bandage, thinking about how absolutely different her life would be if she'd been born into a different family. She's sure she wouldn't have minded if she'd been born into the perfect, average family that had no clue of the spirit world.
She could remove the bandage and the ring without a worry in the world. She wouldn't have ever had a need for the bandage or the ring if she was average.
It's funny how people strive for perfection while wishing to be above the norm; better than average. While she wasn't perfection, she wanted average. At times, she needed it.
She needed it like the human body needed air. She needed it like the sleep deprived author sipping down coffee in the early hours of the morning.
As time went on and she grew, the need grew with her, and it feels like it overpowers her sometimes.
Meeting Akihito is the turning point in her life. Not the moment she met him, no (she stabbed him through the heart—that's not a turning point, but yet another thing that pushed her even further from average than before), but later on, after they'd been through so much together and learned how the other works.
She's at Akihito's house right now, actually. It's well past midnight and they're cuddled on the couch. They're chest to chest with some sappy love movie on in the background, the only source of light casting shadows across the room. He's been asleep for a half an hour at least, and Mirai's been tracing his features—actual features and the silly ones from the shadows—with the slightest hint of a smile on her face.
She runs her fingers through his hair. He's been asleep for a while, she thinks, it's probably safe now.
She reaches to take off her glasses. She knew it was coming, and it makes her laugh aloud when his hand grabs onto her wrist. With one eye open he stares up at her. "And what do you think you're doing?" he asks. (It's quite adorable with the way his hair's all ruffled and he's squinting and with the sleep filling his voice that's trying to sound so serious as if he caught her doing something terrible.)
"How unpleasant," she says, laughter still filling the room.
Maybe, she thinks, maybe average really isn't for me.
My first knk fic and my first akirai fic. Ah I hope it turned out okay! I needed some kind of fluff after the last episode. Plus these two are adorable together and I'm planning on writing more of them in the future. With Christmas so close it's probably going to involve ugly sweaters, hot chocolate, and maybe some mistletoe. And plenty of otp cuddles. I think we all need it.
