The Fire That Fuels You

You're sitting there again, thinking about her again. I can tell because you made no sign that you heard me come up, even though I made my entrance loud enough for all the woodland critters to scatter.

Everyone else gave up on you. I didn't. No one but me knows how it feels to not be with the one you love. I know because that's how I feel with you. You fell in love with someone who couldn't be with you for long. You and I had to sacrifice love for others, me for you and you for the world. But what do we get in return? Broken hearts, that's what.

I can be the fire you need but I'm not the fire you want. You want the kind that is gentle, like a campfire or a fireplace that you can control and snuggle up to. I'm more of an explosion; wild if you don't run away fast enough you will get hurt. You want the fire princess; not the girl with the fiery attitude. But you need me. That is reason enough.

"Sonic!" I leaped from the tree. I was relieved when you turned your head. But I couldn't show any emotion other than anger at you. I had to or else my plan would fall apart.

"Amy!" You practically fell off the log when you saw the state I was in. You jumped up when you saw the hammer. Another victory cheer went off in my head when I saw another feeling in your eyes other than sadness.

"You forgot our date!" I did a risky move then. I threw my hammer in your direction, purposely missing your blue spikes. Another hammer appeared in my hand but I waited to see how you would react.

"What date?" I was ready for this answer.

"I asked you to come to dinner with me a few days ago. Don't you remember? You were right here when I did?" I watch you face transform from confusion into horror as you remember that day. Do you remember the barrage of nonsense questions I asked you? Do you remember how you zoned out and started to agree with everything I said? I remember how I snuck in that specific inquiry when you did that. I never expected you to come. In fact, I was in the same tree at the time the date was supposed to happen. But you didn't know that. All you know is that you had to make amends with a pissed off pink hedgehog.

"Amy, I-I…um…" You start to back away from me, eyes flitting around for an escape. "I'm sorry? I had…um…I was doing something with Tails. You know how he is when he gets into geek mode. I was getting stuff for him because he couldn't leave his…um…thing? We lost track of time and by the time we finished it was too late.

"How come you didn't call to tell me that?" Even though I knew your story was a lie I wanted to see how far you would take it.

"I slept over at his house."

"What about when you went back home?"

"I didn't. I was tired of being cooped in there. I was running around all day."

"And you didn't think to stop by my house to tell me?" When you lapsed into silence I knew I had won. I threw my hammer in your direction again. This time you shifted to my left and took off. "Sonic!" I yelled after your retreating form. But this time I was smiling. I had accomplished what I set out to do. I ran after you.

I knew people would start looking at me like I was crazy. I knew you would run away every time I would come up asking you for a date. Even though I acted I was sadden by that, I was always glad.

I am the fire that fuels you.

If you don't run fast enough you will get burned.
