Insanity Can Wait
"Machika…mumble…mumble"
She slowly crept out of her makeshift bed and reached for her staff. The smooth solid wood was comforting in her hand.
Did they always have to come in the middle of the night?
She crept toward the door, changed her mind and headed for the back window. She heard another mumble, it sounded so close but she neither saw nor felt the presence of anyone in her room.
Must be outside she thought.
She carefully woke up Kiki…not a very good guard dog while she sleeps I guess..
She crept through the back window, Kiki followed; she crawled around toward the front. No one was there and she could tell Kiki didn't sense anyone either. She audibly sighed and headed back in.
This was the third time this week. These things she heard kept her from soundly sleeping. No, not really, she had not been able to sleep well for the past three months. The last time she had slept soundly…was with him. She always slept well when she was with him, even on trains and in relatively undefendible areas such as under the rock arch after the desert pirates. He was always there, a comforting presence by her side. But hue was no longer with her…she missed him so terribly.
The assassins chasing after her were annoying, would they ever give up? She now felt she knew how Rain felt with all the bounty hunters. She crawled back into bed, Kiki curled up at her feet. Was she really hearing things? Was she insane? She laughed mirthlessly, "What would Rain say if he saw me now?"
"Always Rain."
Machika bolted upright, nearly toppeling Kiki.
"Who's there?" She automatically grabbed her scythe.
…. No one answered. ….. No one was there. Tears came to her eyes, she was going insane wasn't she?
"Do you hear the voices?" she looked sadly at Kiki, already knowing the answer.
"Whasa voice?" Machika jumped a foot in the air and found her back hugging the wall. She stared wide eyed at Kiki.
Definitely, Definitely insane!
"Whatsa voice?"
"Kiki?.." she asked hesitantly.
"Me!"
uh oh, she sighed, guess I have to find doc tomorrow. Ask him if he hears Kiki talking…wow, sounds very sane. I can imagine. "doc, does this animal talk?" "….." yeah, that would be a great adventure tomorrow…maybe I'm dreaming…
Her head hurt, she was tired, insanity could wait one night.
"I'm going to bed." She fell into bed.
"Me too!" Kiki clumsily climbed in.
Yes, Insanity could defiantly wait.
