It's All In the Cards

Smaller than playing cards, Keely still manages to fan them out in front of her, her winning hand. One by one she decides on the next one to pick from, examines it, contemplates its new meaning, then places it face down on the scanner. She's making a record just in case her purse is ever lost or stolen. Sure, she'd miss her iPod, but these are irreplaceable. Well, not really. That was the reason for copying them in the first place. Still, each one of these was new. Well, not really. She's had them all before, some for years. Each one a little part of her life, each one is now changed, altered -- redefining her forever? Reflexively, she checks herself out in the mirror of her mind. She still looks the same -- a little older, a little more experienced, a great deal happier. There's something that the cards don't blantantly reveal about her and her future. Something that is obvious to anyone who cares to read between the lines.

The humming stops and the scanner has done its job. She pulls up the image to exam and decides how she feels about this variation in her life. It took weeks of forms to get them all changed, even the Pickford Mall Preferred Shopper card. Was it worth it?

Not merely a smile, but a huge grin erupts across her face as she reads each one aloud, happiness and even a touch of laughter in her voice: Keely Diffy.
