I was going to pull my hair up in a ponytail. I've been doing it for years. Every morning, after brushing my teeth and getting dressed, I'd brush my hair and put it in a ponytail. As I did, I caught a glance of myself in the mirror.
Did I need to put it in a ponytail? What would be the worst thing to happen if I let it down? Would the world end?
I dropped the hair and stared at myself. I didn't look bad. It was a little strange, having hair around my face, but I certainly didn't look horrible.
After this, I didn't know what to do. My friends would have a hundred barrettes, or clips, or claws. Or they would curl it, or crimp it or do something else to it. I didn't have anything like that. I had rubber bands that I used to pull it up in a ponytail.
It looked sort of limp, and had a bump in the back from years of ponytail wearing. After a few minutes, I brushed out the bump and tried to curl it somewhat with my hairbrush. I had no idea what I was doing.
"Kristy! Are you coming down for breakfast?"
"Yeah."
I pulled back from the mirror. Look at the girl with the ratty jeans, old t-shirt, and worn out sneakers. She has her hair down.
Tomorrow, the world.
