It was Sammy's eleventh birthday and Dean didn't see a terrible need for either of them to go to school that day.
SO he woke up early and cleaned the guns while letting Sam sleep in some.
When Sam finally got up, he looked startled that the sun was so high in the sky.
"Dean?" he asked quietly
"Glad to see you're up sleepy head. What do you want to do today?" Dean had twenty bucks in his pocket that he figured would be enough for whatever the kid wanted to do.
"Do? I want to go to school." Sam responded, as he mechanically got dressed.
"Well you can't. It's your birthday." Dean told him matter of factly, crossing his arms over his chest.
"It's my birthday?" Sam whispered, in shock.
"You forgot?" Dean screeched.
Normally Sam was on top of everything and Dean was the one that forgot, but when it came to Sammy he always remembered.
"I did. I can't believe it." Sam said as he sat down heavily on the bed.
"So what do you want to do today?" Dean repeated eagerly.
"Well. There's this song that I really like. Called 99 red balloons. Do you know it Dean?"
Sam said, looking up at Dean hopefully.
"You want to set loose 99 red balloons? I think I can arrange that, if you don't mind helping me blow them up." Dean agreed smiling.
The little things were what mattered, like letting Sammy be a kid and if this was what he wanted then that's what they'd do.
They left the hotel about 11am.
John wasn't due back for another 2 days so they had to walk to the store.
Thankfully they had the balloons, although the sales clerk did look at them oddly; thankfully she didn't comment.
They trekked out into the forest that began about half a mile from the store where they procured the balloons.
At a nice clearing they began blowing up the balloons and letting them loose. It took them a while to let them all go. But Dean thought it was pretty cool to watch.
It wasn't until they were on their way home, and it was nearing sunset that Dean realized they hadn't eaten all day.
"Sam. We've got 14 bucks left. What do you want for dinner?" He made his stash seem smaller so that he could have enough to get Sam a cake after wards.
"Pizza? Burgers? I dunno. Burgers. Definitely." Sam answered, joyfully hopping around on the side of the road.
"Burgers it is little bro. A good choice as always." Dean nodded and dropped Sam off at the hotel before making his way to the local barbecue joint.
He ordered dinner, paid and still had 5 dollars left some how. He got a box of cupcakes from the convenience store and retrieved their burgers.
He knew that Sam would be expecting something. So he put the cupcakes in Sam's burger bag and his burger in the cupcake box. He loved to trip his brother up, especially on days like this.
They had a good night, Sam was so surprised by his cupcakes and the burgers were good.
They went to bed around 11pm and Dean lay there for a while thinking
"I wish everyday was like this." and "What would happen to us if Dad doesn't come home?"
But Just as he was drifting off, he heard the door open and John stumbled through and threw his pack down.
Dean sighed and rolled over happily thinking "At least I remembered Sam's birthday. He didn't even call."
