His smile had to be the most beautiful sight she had ever witnessed, and she had seen many wonderful things, like snow and the ocean. Yet his smile outshone everything. It was always bright and warm, like the summer sun, and full of kindness, compassion, and gentleness no one in the world was capable of displaying.

To Machika, only one other man possessed such a smile. Only one other man meant the world to her and more. Only one other man believed in her the way she needed, and that man had been her grandfather. Zol's smile had been majestic, full of love and care. Some might have said it was because she was his granddaughter and grandfathers always loved their grandchildren unconditionally, but Machika knew. Zol taught her how to be a Reaper and to possess honour and compassion, some very important essences to being human . . . the same way Rain was teaching her how to live and love, important essences to being human as well. She loved it when Rain smiled, even when she knew he wanted to break down and cry for all that he had lost.

Machika reached over and ran her fingers through Rain's hair. The man slept through the light contact, but a smile tugged on his lips. Machika's heart skipped a beat, and a smile of her own graced her features.

She loved Rain's smile, and she promised herself she would be the reason for his smile until the day they both died. His smile was the most beautiful sight she had ever witnessed, after all.
