Maya watched as Riley buried her head into Lucas' shoulder and rode around the room on a white horse. When Riley looked back at her she gave her a thumbs up and a cheesy smile. When Riley looked away she sighed and walked out of the room.
They were the perfect couple. Maya knew that. Riley had a crush on Lucas from the moment she laid eyes on him, and Maya had been there for her. She had encouraged Riley's crush and talked about Lucas until the sun went down. She had talked about being Riley's maid of honor and discussed how their weddings would match.
But Maya knew that none of it was real. Every time she thought about Riley and Lucas she wanted to puke. And that first time Riley saw Lucas in the subway, and she saw the way she looked at him, she thought she would die. She remembered the absolute fear she felt, how her breath hitched in her throat because she knew at that moment that she was losing Riley.
Because every time Riley talked about how perfect and attractive Lucas was, Maya wanted to tell her how perfect she was. Every time Riley talked about her wedding she wished she would say 'our wedding.' Every time she saw Riley look at Lucas, she wished and she prayed that someday, Riley would look at her that way. And then the realization would hit her again that she never would, and it stings just as bad as it did the first time.
