"Magic"
"Mama, I love you." Jeff whispered laying his small head on his mother's chest feeling comfort in the feel of her breath against his hair.
"I love you too." She sighed before falling asleep. Matt watched as she softly stroked his younger brother's hair even as she slept. He watched them, Jeff sniffling softly as he cried, his mom's small form overwhelmed by the giant machines hooked up to her, the quiet beeping noises emanating from it making a thunderous inside his heart for he knew that it was just the machines that were helping her stay alive. He couldn't stand seeing her in pain, knew his father was completely distraught over losing his wife, and Jeff, the closest to his mother hadn't slept in the three days since their mother had taken a turn for the worst and had been in the hospital since.
from the back of your big brown eyes
i knew you'd be gone as soon as you could
and i hoped you would
It had just been a routine check up that their mother had gotten every year. But this past time she had come home and Matt would never forget the look of fear on her face when she sat them all down and told them she had a tumor in her brain. For the first three months everything was almost normal except for his mother's frequent visits to the doctor as they tried to set up an operation time to try to remove the tumor.
we could see that you weren't yourself
and the lines on your face did tell
it's just as well
you'd never be yourself again
Then one day their mother and father sat Matt and Jeff down to tell them that the doctor's had realized that it was no use. The tumor was too big. Too much to take out, and that the next six months would be all she would have.
saw you last night
dance by the light of the moon
stars in your eyes
free from the life that you knew
Matt loved his mom more than anything. She was the glue that held their family together. The only one to control Jeff and the one who always believed that they could do anything they ever wanted. He closed his eyes and remembered one of his fondest memories of his mom- the day before his first school dance when she had cleared up the living room floor and taught him how to dance. Then his father walked in from work and they had danced together his mom's brown eyes lighting up with love and laughter for her family.
saw you last night
dance by the light of the moon
stars in your eyes
free from the life that you knew
As the pallbearers lowered her coffin to the ground Matt wiped a tear from his eyes. He looked at his younger brother trying to hold back the tears but couldn't. His father simply had his eyes closed and then Matt looked up when he felt a cool breeze blow through the small cemetery.
you're the magic that holds the sky up from the ground
you're the breath that blows these cool winds 'round
trading places with an angel now
saw you last night
dance by the light of the moon
stars in your eyes
free from the life that you knew
