His hand hovered between them, the black glove kept tactile sensation to a minimum. Rey felt the death knell of the Resistance even as they lingered in stasis.

"Rule with me."

No.

No.

no.

The tiny part of her, the child part of her begged for solace. Kylo- no, Ben treasured her. She could see the naked emotion swimming in his fathomless eyes. The same yawning pit of the dark side beckoned to her on Ahch-to. The same yearning embraced her heart even now.

"Don't do this…," she murmured something to that effect. In the sudden vacuum of silence between them, she had to say something. She had to try. Tears filled her eyes. The carnage burned around them, the remnants of Snoke's guards a visceral reminder of the conflict that had freed the galaxy of a tyrant. In some back corner of her mind, Rey remembered the first few chaotic moments of their battle against the armored guards, the way she and him had melded their fighting styles, dueling as one entity.

Rey, please.

His lips didn't move.

The voice, his voice, was in her mind. Rey caught her breath. The image of their tentative touch seared into her nerve cells. The moment when she had found belonging.

I had no one.

Now I have you.

"I have to know." She was shaking, trembling all over. The spitfire Snoke had praised had dissolved into her psyche. "Did he create our connection?"

Snoke had claimed to know Kylo's mind.

To see all.

Was he still projecting his will through Kylo even now…?

"No." The faintest of bitter smiles traced the scarred face. "He didn't see his own death."

She exhaled and the Force moved within her.

"Stop the attack."

"The past-"

Please.

The one word echoed through their connection. Rey felt him listen, hesitate to shatter the fragile trust between enemies, between them. Whole galaxies could've been obliterated, minutes were all they had and she knew the next few seconds would either destroy them or...

The past, my dreams, have all led me to you. Why seek to destroy the thing that has brought us to this moment?

Their hands touched. She felt herself drifting toward him, the gravity of a larger star drawing her into his orbit. "Alright." The word was hushed, grudging in cadence. His grip almost painfully tight drew her into the shelter of his body. "The future I saw-" Rey hesitated, watching as he input the necessary commands. The console connected him to the Star Destroyer's bridge. Ben turned to her, his resonant voice rekindling the thing she thought she had lost after leaving Luke Skywalker.

Hope.

"The future is what we make of it."
