The Flash: The Key to Friendship
(Spoiler alert if you've not seen the premier episode of season 2, this is an Alternative ending to the 1st episode, I hope you enjoy)
Barry had a very long day, he had just stopped Atom smasher to finding Harrison Wells confession to making up to Caitlin for not being able to save Ronnie, deep down he still blamed himself for what happened and that was never going to change, Barry arrived at Star Labs not long after seeing his father onto the train.
"How you doing?" Joe asked and Barry shrugged sighing as he ran a hand through his hair "Deep down every time I win I feel I still lose" he replied and Joe leaned his head to the side before smiling holding the key to the city the mayor had given him at the Flash day celebration.
"No… that's not mine" Barry whispered shaking his head.
"Barry, this is yours… you earned this" Joe held it to him.
Barry took the key and held it in his hands as she smiled sadly "No… this should go to the man who saved this city, or to be more precise… his widow" Barry walked passed Joe and into the main lab where Caitlin stood with Cisco.
"Caitlin can I have a word?" Barry asked and Caitlin nodded her head before following him into the next room away from everyone.
"Everything ok?" she asked concerned as Barry turned to look at her.
"Caitlin, I've not been the perfect friend… I was busy with my own problems when you found out Ronnie was alive after the particle accelerator and I never noticed, and now he's gone again and it's on me" Barry held the key behind his back.
Caitlin looked tearful as she stepped closer "I never blamed you"
Barry nodded "I know, but I will always blame myself… the Flash day celebration was to thank the wrong man for saving the city so now I am correcting that mistake… I may not be able to thank Ronnie and give him this key so I think it is fitting that the key goes to you" he held the key to Caitlin and she shook her head "Barry… it's not mine" she wiped her eyes as he handed her the key gently placing it in her hands "It is yours, and from here on Caitlin I promise to be a better friend to you" Caitlin wrapped her arms around Barry tight and sobbed into the corner of his neck.
Hugging her tight he felt her sob into him as he felt silent tears run down his cheeks as he held his friend tight as Caitlin continued to sob "I miss him so much" she whispered and Barry nodded his head as he rubbed her back as she continued to sob softly, pulling back she wiped her eyes and as she held the key in her hand and Barry smiled.
"Barry… armed robbery in progress" Cisco called from the main lab and Barry smiled "See you soon" he said to Caitlin before speeding off, Caitlin smiled and looked to the key as she sat on the treadmill unable to stay standing.
Barry sped to the robbery with one intent in mind, being a better hero that his mother would want and to be there for Caitlin when she needed him.
