My friend had spinal fusion – she fell down the stairs and learning piano helped her come to terms with it. This is my first fiction in about 18 months so my apologies if it's a little rusty. Oh and you might need this - watch?v=VksPTrfSTpo
All of Me – John Legend
Ever since the boat explosion, Harold had many things to overcome: the burden of the machine and Nathan's death, his mourning over Nathan, his longing to save others and his own life changing injuries. The only thing worse than all of those was Grace: the tears she'd shed for Harold as he watched from behind the screen. Love. Pure untainted love.
Spinal fusion surgery – the application of metal clips to his neck vertebrae had limited his neck, legs and right arm movement but learning to play piano after it helped him overcome his injuries and loses. He'd always said to Grace that he'd play at their wedding, and then joked that he needed to learn first. She'd always giggle a private giggle reserved for him.
Harold sat on the stool of beautiful shining black grand piano with the lid half open. He sat with his rigid posture and took two deep breaths with his eyes closed listening to the silence. He pushed down three notes in his right hand and smiled. His left hand brought the chords in, slowly he played and with every mistake he made he started again. He needed to get this right for her.
The harmony of piano notes filled the vast room at one of his safe houses, slowly at first then up to speed as Harold's confidence grew, he started using his left leg on the peddles. He smiled as he started the second verse.
''Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I'll give my all to you
You're my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I'm winning
'Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you'
Harold hummed the rest of the song as he played. He finished and looked to the left of the piano. The picture of Grace and himself, the same as the one in her house.
'I give you all me' he said softly. A single tear ran down his cheek, then he sobbed for the woman he loved and lost.
