Lullaby

Ring ring! Ring ring! Ring ring!

You Miyagi slowly lifted his head and stared warily at his cell phone.

"Of course", Miyagi thought to himself. "It's three o' clock in the morning. Of course it's him."

He decided to answer it, knowing that if he didn't, he would only be terrorized more during daytime hours.

The phone display continued to flash "Shinobu Takatsuki" until Miyagi picked it up.

"Hell-", Miyagi started groggily.

"I can't sleep," Shinobu Takatsuki interrupted.

"Probably because you're on the phone. Why don't you go ahead and hang up?"

"I didn't call to hear your sarcasm, old man."

"Why did you call, then?"

There was a brief silence before Shinobu muttered "I can't sleep."

"I heard you the first time. What do you want me to do about it?"

"I don't know! Just do something."

"Listen kid," Miyagi sighed, "I don't know what to tell you. I have work in the morning and you have classes."

"I'm not a kid," Shinobu insisted.

Miyagi rolled his eyes. Although he accepted that Shinobu was part of his life now, he still saw the younger man as a kid.

Suddenly, Miyagi had an idea. He laughed quietly to himself, even though he knew that this next move might cost him later.

"Go to sleep, if not, you'll be tired. Go to sleep, if not, you'll get sick," Miyagi sang with a hint of amusement in his voice.

"W-what are you doing?" Shinobu stuttered, obviously taken aback.

"Singing you a lullaby," Miyagi stated. "Go to slee-"

"But!-"

"Go to sleep, if not you'll oversleep tomorrow. Go to sleep, if not, you'll miss your morning classes. Go to sleep, if not, we'll be up until five at this rate."

Miyagi continued to sing for Shinobu even though his voice was hoarse and his lyrics were too practical for a lullaby. On the other end of phone, Shinobu could feel himself being lulled to sleep.

As Miyagi finished his impromptu lullaby, a long pause filled the air. He began to call Shinobu's name, but then quickly cut himself off when he heard deep breathing on the other end of the phone. He smiled, surprised that his plan had actually worked, but glad all the same. Ready to finally get some sleep himself, he ended the call, but not before gently crooning "Goodnight, Shinobu-chin" into the receiver.
