The Hunger Games

(According to Peeta Mellark)

Chapter 1

Reaping Day. The day where every child between the ages of twelve and eighteen are not safe, no matter how rich you are.

Leaning on the windowsill, I look at the spot where they have just finished assembling the stage. Two tables with two bowls full of names are standing on them, one for the girls and one for the boys. Fifteen of those bits of paper has Peeta scrawled on it.

I can imagine my name being pulled out of the glass bowl, selected by none other than Effie Trinket. My name being read out in that bright and positive voice of hers. But that can't happen, I haven't applied for tesserae, not like Katniss. Katniss Everdeen.

"Peeta, it's time to go," my mother called from downstairs. My thoughts had rendered me deaf to the horn that marked that it was time to start walking towards the Justice Building. Everyone has to go. I remember last year, someone hid in their attic trying to wait out the Reaping, the consequence was not pretty.

"Peeta, dear, you have to come downstairs now," slowly, I drew back from the window and surveyed the objects that were placed neatly around my room. I was looking for a lucky token, something that I could use to comfort myself. Another call from my mother rushed me down the stairs to our front door. My parents were standing close to me, watching.

"Don't worry son, you won't be reaped," my father, an awkward man when it came to anything to do with comforting people, patted me on the back. A silence passed where we all hoped and prayed it wouldn't be me and then we walked out the door and took our places in the square.
