Chapter 1

Another day at Mode and Betty was absolutely exhausted. She was proof reading some articles that Daniel asked her to go through. Everytime she flipped a page, it still seemed like there were another 10 to go. Betty simply couldn't do this anymore, her eyes hurt and her bones ached. She turned to stare at her reflection in the window, her hair looked frazzled, her skin dainty and pale and her eyes bloodshot. "I seriously need a break", Betty said aloud. She got up from her desk and decided to go and see Christina. Not for long though, Daniel was in a meeting and he would be due back any time soon.

"You don't need a change Betty", Christina stressed for the hundredth time. "You are a lovely girl, why caught up in this image all of a sudden?"

"That's exactly what I don't want to be Christina, 'just a lovely girl' who does well in the world". Well that wasn't entirely true, Betty thought, she did enjoy the prospect of helping friends and family to bring out the best in them, and that more than likely included Daniel at the top of the list. But she wanted more and she wanted to be seen as something more.

"Ah, now I didn't say you were a do-gooder", Christina joked, reaching for a pair of scissors over Betty, who was sat at a desk. "Now, do you think I should give this skirt a bit of an edge coz it looks kinda...bleh to me?"

"Look Christina, I'm serious, I need a complete new look, I need your help and that skirt just needs a little pleading from the bottom then you're done". Christina was a very talented person, sometimes...well most of the time she never praised herself enough. Her confidence overridden by Wilhelmina's snide remarks. Betty was so proud of her friend, maybe she should tell her that more often to boost her confidence.

Christina went off to find a brown thread, came back after a few minutes and started pleading the skirt. Raising her eyebrows, she enquired, "This doesn't have anything to do with the so-called 'Bachelor of the Year' does it?" Betty's cheeks flushed, "Er...no, why? What makes you say that?"

"No reason...actually only the other day you were completely thrown-off by his behaviour when you found him in his office in an uncompromising position with a leggy blonde".

"Well it's an office of business, we work as professionals and blondie shouldn't have been distracting Daniel from his work anyway", Betty protested, though she knew Christina wouldn't buy it. If anything, she was only making it worse for herself. So she had fallen for her boss...correction friend, big deal. All she wanted was for him to see her in a different light and maybe even fall in love with her too? Or was that being too optimistic? Ah, what the hell, if Cinderella could hope and dream then so could she.

"Right and Daniel was the one who invited her for a little game of 'I Spy' or nookey or whatever it is you kids are calling it these days". Christina said, waving a hand.

"Okay fine, you win. Now are you going to help me do this or not?"

Christina straightened, looked Betty in the eye and replied, "First thing's first, a rummage through last season's collection, then meet me here for 5.30 sharp to get started on you".
