If I Had Never Loved

If I had never cried before,

Perhaps my anguish would not be so great,

Perhaps the tears would come no more,

Or they would resolve to hate...

But I have cried.

And I have sobbed a pillow wet,

And this ocean from my eyes,

Has raked my body yet.

If I had never thought before,

Perhaps my thoughts would not be so dark,

Perhaps I'd think of things less sore,

Or let them not upon me mark…

But I have thought.

And I have thought in great detail,

That without you, it seems that I,

Will never from these sad shores sail.

If I had never loved before,

Perhaps my pain would not be so keen,

Perhaps for you, I'd have no amore,

Or in my preference lean…

But I have loved.

And I have adored you from the start,

And you are all, but gone now,

And with you is my heart.
