I really, really like this couple. It's becoming an unhealthy obsession. Poniko and Shitai are soooo underrated! *cries* This is a prologue, so it's shorter and has a different mood from the rest of the story. I guess it's kind of to establish that Shitai has an interest in Poniko, and to show that she once had a personality.
I don't own Yume Nikki or its characters.
He couldn't lie, she was very attractive. Her long blonde hair was tied back into its signature ponytail, soft bangs framing her pretty face. Many would also agree; she was tall, had curves in the right places, and generally gave off a warm vibe.
But Shitai Douro new Poniko Kakusu was more than just a pretty face.
Despite looking more like a runway model than a tenth grade student, Poniko had one fatal flaw. She never smiled. It was practically universally accepted that her bored, neutral expression never changed.
Shitai didn't know if it was her uninviting looks that stopped people from talking to her, or if she was just an antisocial type of person. Perhaps it was a little of both.
"You know," Madotsuki began, "Poniko wasn't always like this."
Shitai looked at his friend curiously.
Madotsuki was a short, fuller figured girl with chocolate brown hair always tied in two braids. The both of them decided to eat lunch outside in the school garden so she could practice her flute for Sensei Masada's music class.
She lowered her flute and began, "At one time we were best friends."
Shitai held back a laugh. He couldn't imagine the spacey Madotsuki and the cold Poniko hanging out together and doing average girly things.
Madotsuki smiled sadly. "I can see you laughing."
"Sorry, but that's really hard to believe."
"Yeah, sometimes I doubt it myself. But then I remember all the wonderful times we had together," Madotsuki closed her eyes and went off into her own world.
And just like that, the conversation was over just as soon as it started.
Lunchtime was coming to an end, and both students started cleaning up after themselves. Madotsuki finished first and began making her way back to the school.
"She used to smile-," Shitai turned to the direction of Madotsuki's voice.
"-and it was the most gorgeous thing in the world."
He held his breathe.
"One day it all just stopped. Her smile and our friendship were gone," she whispered.
