Lassiter was walking to his car, looking forward to going home. Another busy day had ended, and his work was done.
Reaching his Crown Vic, Lassiter was about to unlock it when he happened to look up and over his car.
He gripped his keys hard, but wasn't aware of it.
There was his partner, Shawn, smiling sweetly as she walked over to a guy. A boyish, cheerful-faced kid who grinned as though he'd won the luckiest-guy-on-earth award when Shawn got to him. He reached for her hand and enclosed it within both of his, as though he was afraid Shawn would change her mind and suddenly run away.
Lassiter certainly hoped it would happen, although he could somewhat symphatize with the guy. If Shawn went out with him, Lassiter would not want her to change her mind about it, too. He'd do everything to make her want to stay with him.
He was shaken out of his thoughts when he heard Shawn's laugh. Looking back at them, he saw the kid leading Shawn into a green Honda Civic. Did the kid know that green was Shawn's favorite color? Cause Lassiter sure did. Shawn had practically made him memorize it.
He looked away from them, but it took a considerable amount of effort to do so. Unlocking his car, Lassiter got inside and started the engine. He glanced at the pair through his rearview mirror one last time, then drove away, with only the heaviness in his heart keeping him company.

Sitting in the front seat of Nick's car, Shawn's mind wandered over to her partner. She knew Lassiter had seen them. The years of training she went through under her father's guidance had honed her senses well. So well that she could tell for sure when someone was watching her. And those senses told her that Lassiter's eyes had been on her and Nick, even though he was looking away when she glanced over at him.
She wanted to know what had gone through his mind when he saw her with another man. Was he curious? Irritated? Did he even care at all?
It might be wishful thinking, but a part of her wanted to believe Lassiter was jealous. She could already picture it in her mind.
He would stomp over and wrap a possessive arm around Shawn, growling at Nick to "Stay away from my partner!" Then Lassiter would drag her away from the poor shocked guy. She would tease Lassiter about his Alpha male outburst, and he would just snap and deny it all. And finally, just before pushing her into his Crown Vic, he'd hold her face within both hands, and kiss her in full view of Nick, and everyone else.
Caught up in her imaginings, she didn't realize she'd been smiling the entire time, until Nick asked her about it.
"I just remembered something that happened earlier at the station."
"Mind telling me about it?"
Shawn looked at her date, and pictured him with dark, shorter hair. His eyes were already the right color, but still not the shade of blue she'd come to love so much.
"Something my partner did." At least, I wish he did….
