Dreams That Come
The sunlight blinded her, but she could not feel its heat. She turned her back to the light, and there stood Shinta. He looked at her for a while with unblinking eyes, then he spoke. She could not understand his words, but they sounded like words of farewell. The light of the sun faded, and she turned to look behind her. There stood Tomoe. Tomoe smiled and nodded. She turned back to where Shinta had been, but he was not there anymore.
Kaoru slowly opened her eyes. She heard a familure voice ring in her ear. "Megumi?" "She's okay!!!" shouted Yahiko. "Mom?" said Kenji. "Quiet!!!" shouted Megumi. Kaoru looked around her. There were her friends; Tsubume, Yahiko, her son Kenji, and Megumi. "Where's Shinta?" Megumi paused, "You mean Kenshin." "Umm.o yes, Kenshin.where is he?" "Poor girl, you don't remember a thing, do you?" Megumi sighed. "Kenshin's gone." "Gone.gone where?" Megumi struggled to keep her voice calm, "He died, yesterday." Her first reaction was to ignore what had been said. It occurred to her that Megumi might not have even spoken. "No, Kenshin can't be dead, he can't!" "Rest Kaoru, don't waste your energy." Said Yahiko. Megumi looked at her with worried eyes. "Kaoru, it will be okay." "How will it be okay??!! He can't be gone, he just can't!" "Mom, please calm down, if you stress your self too much." Kaoru began to cry. The pain and longing for her lost Shinta was to strong, and the tears overflowed in her eyes. Megumi motioned the others to leave. She looked back one last time. Kaoru had gone into this state before. This happened every time Kenshin left, but Kaoru always got out of it when Kenshin came back, or she went to retrieve him. This time though . Megumi worried that Kaoru would not get out of it. She shut the door.
"Megumi?!! Why did u leave her there? All alone??" demanded Yahiko. "Yeah!? What if she tries something?" asked Kenji. "She won't try anything. not in this state. And. frankly I don't think she'll be getting out of it." "You mean anytime soon, she won't be getting out anytime soon." Megumi looked at him paused, then walked away.
Kaoru lay on her side in the bed. Memories of the days she and Shinta had spent together flowed to her. The grief was overwhelming. Cherry blossoms.
Shinta leaned on a cherry blossom tree. His scar gone and a smile on his face. He seemed to be daydreaming about something wonderful. It was not how she had remembered him. Suddenly, she saw Tomoe running to him. He's happy, he's finally with Tomoe. She always could make him happy.Tomoe said something that made his face light up, and Kaoru's heart sink even more. Tomoe left and a cherry blossom fell into Shinta's hand. His face became lined with sorrow.
"I can't believe Megumi, she just left her" said Yahiko. "I used to think she was a really nice lady, now I think she's worse then Kenshin" said Kenji. "Hey! Kenshin was a great guy! Its just.its just you never got to see that from him." "I'll say. He could have done a much better job of being a father then just leaving me with mom." "Kenshin was a great man. I wish he was still around." Kenji and Yahiko where silent for a while, then Kenji spoke, "What was my father doing that was so important that he had to leave his family?" "Kenshin.felt guilty. and even though he couldn't use a sword anymore.he wanted to atone his sins." "I still think he would have been better off here." "He probably would have"
Shinta sat on the porch, Tomoe beside him. They had food in front of them and cherry blossoms bloomed all around. A man came and spoke to Tomoe, and they left together. Shinta smiled at their retreating backs then looked down at his food. Sorrow once again lined his face.
Kaoru awoke from her dream. Her tears had dried to her cheeks. She began to cry again.
