Vindictive

Sit and listen to this history,

Sit and listen to my distress.

I tell a tale of great despair,

I tell a tale of a twisted mess.

For once there were four very good friends

Who met during festivity.

The best of wizards and witches they were

Full of life and vigor, you see.

Years before King Arthur ruled,

Years before our good Merlin,

They laughed and loved and learned and lived,

Knowing naught of treachery or sin.

Courageous Godric of the moor,

Ambitious Salazar of the fen,

Generous Helga of the valley,

Intelligent Rowena of the glen,

Together they set out

To create a place of learning

To teach the children all they knew

Satisfy their scholarly yearning.

But this is a tale of love and loss

Romance has a great part.

For through it all, the two males loved

Kind Helga for her great heart.

But Salazar's dark, brooding past

Caught up with him in the last

Jealousy ran unrestrained,

For Helga had pained

In loving-- ­a muggle!

And Salazar's bitter desire

Turned into vindictive fire.

Brave Godric knew not what to do.

His friend's anger made friendships tense,

Created enmity among their Houses,

No peace was to be had hence.

When Helga turned a blind eye

Upon Salazar and Godric,

Their fury turned upon her then

And she became deadly sick.

Rowena rushed to her rescue,

Criticizing the men,

And Salazar in his resentment,

Left the school forever then.

The three left collapsed in grief,

Their students not noticing a thing,

Until that unexpected day,

In the middle of the spring,

When Rowena announced her departure,

To seek out Salazar,

Leaving the others in their Hogwarts,

She hunted near and far.

The other two were left to languish

In the growing dusk.

Hogwarts itself was never the same,

It became an empty husk.

This is their story, this sad, sad tale,

Explained by me, the Sorting Hat.
