SPOILERS FOR RINGS OF AKHATEN.
Let me tell you a story about a madman in a blue box that zoomed around space and time like it was nothing. Let me tell you a story about his memories. A story where he saw the beginning of space and time itself, where he marked the end of the reign of the Time Lords, how he is the last of his people, how he has seen time and space end, moment by moment. How he is a warrior, to combat those memories and to keep feeling and loosing and wanting and winning and needing. He finds himself stuck in his memories, fighting the hoard of them. He is a warrior. But as the star in front of him burns away, threatening to take with it the seven worlds, he must rest. He must concede his memories to stave off the beast. Life's cloak clings to his bones as he relives his most painful and most joyous times. Wake up, they speak to him. The fire of the parasite star burns at him, trying to strip away his life. But he's awake, and he holds on to all that he has, he accepts it. He understands now, and he wants more. He wants to know what this new Life has.
Now take the young woman with him. Who holds the leaf that made her. The most important leaf in the universe. To anyone else it would have been tossed aside without a second thought. But this was cherished, set inside her book. "101 Places to See" started with that fragile red leaf. Stories and memories are set inside its lacy veins, hopes are set within the membrane between. There is both what was and what should have been in this leaf though, dreams from a mother gone too soon and from a daughter that inherited the days yet to come. The days in which to see and live. She had set herself to stay in one place, never moving, never changing. But the words speak to her, the memories and the dreams. They tell her to wake up, to move, and let Life spin it's cloak over her. They tell her to walk a different route, to sing a different song, to travel like she dreamed. Live. Live.
And that bright parasite that awoke the want to live in the madman, took the leaf from her, and gave her an infinity for everyday. The star couldn't handle both the past and the future, and so appeased with the knowledge of what the past brings and what the future holds, the star faded and all that was left a madman with a blue box and the woman with 101 places to see.
Readers, the last song at the end of the episode, the freaking lyrics are gorgeous, "Rest now my warrior. Rest now, hardship is over. Live. Wake up. Wake up and let the cloak of life cling to your bones." I might have listened to it on repeat for an hour...
