It was the year 1957 when James Carter, a 48-year-old black man met 47-year-old Lydia Hunt, a white woman. He stood a prominent 6'2" with very broad shoulders; he had a semi-muscular build with red hair and green eyes. Lydia stood 5'6". She was slim built with long beautiful legs and a face as pretty as a picture. She too had red hair but unlike James, her hair was naturally brown. The red just made her appearance more...desirable.
The pair met and fell in love but unfortunately couldn't show their love for one another due to the segregation era that they were living in. Wondering how all this started? Continue reading to find out.
On April 19, 1908, 22-year-old Leslie Carter, a housekeeper working for a wealthy white attorney named Roy Lawson, was attending to her daily cleaning duties. One sunny afternoon, Leslie went up to the master bedroom to finish her cleaning for the day; she had already cleaned the rest of the house. She walked into the room and right behind her followed Mr. Lawson.
"Good afternoon, Miss Carter!" he blurted out in his heavy southern accent. "Good afternoon, sir," Leslie said in a low tone. She seemed to have feared the man. "Beautiful job you've done..as usual. House never looked better," he said. "Thank you, Mr. Lawson, sir, but I don't need any recognition for something I do every day." Roy slowly turned toward Leslie as his hands were still placed on his hips. "What did say to me, girl?" "I-I said that I don't need any recon-" Before she could finish repeating the sentence, Roy slapped her; she shrieked out in terror as he did. "You better never talk back to me again, girl! Ya hear!" He shouted. His face was just as red as his tie. Leslie's nose was dripping with blood. "You'd better apologize to right now! I mean it!" "I will not" "What!?" "I said I won't." She no longer cowered in fear. He quickly grabbed her face. "Let go of me!" "This is dealing isn't over, girl," he said. He walked away. Leslie stood looking at Roy as he walked out of the room. She then went to clean her nose.
Later that same night, Roy was still a bit upset from the incident that took place earlier in the afternoon.
"Honey? Are you coming to bed?" Mrs. Lawson asked her husband. "Yeah. I'll be right there." Roy washed his face then went to lay next to Ellen. As he laid there in silence, thoughts had begun to flood his mind. He looked over and noticed she had quickly fallen asleep. He then began to ease his way out of bed and made his way to and out of the door.
