Steve and Natasha- No.26: 'She/he's gone and it's all my fault'

Steve stood by the end of the Widow's bed, watching the sleeping redhead. Sleeping, Steve shook her head and didn't move his gaze from her. He couldn't, not when it had been his fault. He couldn't. Clint soon rounded the door, looking between both his friends in the room before he moved closer and put a hand on Steve's shoulder carefully.

"It's not your fault you know…" He says the words carefully, knowing anything could set off the older male. "Nat's headstrong and stubborn. You wouldn't have been able to change her mind." Steve nodded gratefully but didn't say anything else, it certainly felt like it was his fault, he should've tried harder, and he should've made her stop.

Steve sighed, running a hand over his face but not moving from his position at the end of the Widow's bed. Clint patted his friend's back and turned to leave. "Don't put yourself down because this isn't your fault." Steve barely acknowledges him and just moves to Nat's side, sitting beside her and taking her hand carefully.

"She's gone…" Clint turned back around to face him. "And it's all my fault." Steve's voice breaks on the last word, sniffling lightly as he bows his head and clings to the redhead's hand. He's not willing to let anyone else take the fault, he did that. He should've been covering her and now she was gone, gone from his life, his friend. He watched her carefully, letting out a breath and sighing heavily; his breathing trembling ever so slightly.

"It's all my fault." He repeated and put his head in his hands, the captain being defeated- Hydra would've been proud. As Steve gripped her small hand in his bigger one, he could've sworn he felt her squeeze his hand slightly. His eyes wandered to hers, searching for any sign that she may be awake. Steve sighed heavily, looking away from her. Surely, he'd just imagined it. She wasn't coming back anytime soon.

And that was his fault.
