Hephaestion was a fifteen year-old Athenian page in the army of Philip, king of Macedonia. He was also one of the most handsome youths among the prince's friends, but he wasn't aware of his looks or the many desires and sighs he awoke while walking in the streets of Mieza.
In the last few days he had discovered something that was worrying him to death and he had no one to talk about, his father was long dead as well as his mother, and his friends would laugh at him because he was still a "boy". The only one who would understand him could be Alexander but they were not in the best terms these days; in fact they hadn't talked to each other for the last ten days when Hephaestion had decided to speak up what was worrying him.
Hephaestion was still suffering a lot because he loved his friend dearly. He stopped his pacing for a while and sat down on his thin cot in the barracks.
He wondered how he could have been so stupid to push Alexander so hard, and the conversation came vividly to his mind again.
" YOU WON'T ADMIT YOU LOVE ME AND SO HOW AM I EVER TO KNOW, YOU ONLY TELL ME PERHAPS, PERHAPS, PERHAPS" Hephaestion nearly shouted.
"You know I care about you, Hephaestion, but my feelings are still so cloudy, I don't know what real love is" Alexander answered.
"I need a firm answer, A MILLION TIMES I ASK YOU AND THEN I ASK YOU OVER AGAIN AND YOU ONLY ANSWER PERHAPS, PERHAPS, PERHAPS, I need to know, Alexander" the brunette youth demanded.
"I can't answer right now, Hephaestion, please, don't push me" the young prince said wit sadness in his voice.
"IF YOU CAN'T MAKE YOUR MIND UP, WE'LL NEVER GET STARTED, AND I DON'T WANNA' WIND UP BEING PARTED and BROKEN HEARTED." Hephaestion said firmly.
"Don't say that Phai, you must give me time, Phai, please" the golden boy pleaded.
"Don't Phai me, Alexander, I have given you enough time to decide if you love me or not, SO IF YOU REALLY LOVE ME, SAY YES, BUT IF YOU DON'T, my DEAR, CONFESS AND PLEASE DON'T TELL ME PERHAPS, PERHAPS, PERHAPS." Hephaestion urged for an answer.
"I don't love you, Hephaestion" Alexander confessed looking at his friend into his eyes.
"Thanks, Alexander" and saying that, Hephaestion left the prince standing in the middle of the hall.
