When Finn found him, Kurt was sitting at the piano in the choir room, the keys under his fingers emitting a languid, peaceful melody.
The quarterback stood in the doorway, waiting for the other boy to finish the song but Kurt stopped abruptly, the keys jarring as he turned to look at Finn.
"Shouldn't you be throwing people in dumpsters with your fellow gorillas?"
Finn's face flashed with hurt and guilt – both of which he knew he deserved.
"I – I wanted to…"
Kurt stood, making his way slowly towards Finn, his arms crossed and one precisely shaped eyebrow raised.
"Apologize? What for? You didn't do anything Finn." The shorter boy said it casually, but Finn could hear the hurt in his voice and it made his stomach twist with shame as he remembered Kurt's words earlier that day.
...'It's called taking one for the team'...
"Kurt, I'm really sorry-"
Kurt shook his head, a sad smile gracing his face.
"No, Finn. You're not. You're relieved, because you can still mess around with your football oafs. You're relieved that I took the responsibility off your hands and slushied myself. I-" Kurt looked away for a second gaining his composure. He turned a glare on Finn, his face flushed in disgust and anger. "I smell like grape. I hate grape."
...'take some time to think whether or not any of your friends on the football team would have done that for you'...
"R-Rachel likes it-" Finn stuttered out, trying to ignore the niggling little voice in his head that said no one else would have done what Kurt had done for him.
"I don't care what Rachel likes Finn!" Kurt exclaimed angrily, grabbing his head as he turned around. When he faced Finn again, his voice was no longer angry, but worried and sincere. "I care that you would rather be considered 'cool' than to be considered my – our – friend. I took one for the team today Finn because that's what friends do – they help each other out. The Glee club has been there for you and Quinn – we don't judge you. And we certainly don't throw slushies in your face."
"I know, alright!? I screwed up, just for a change! It's just.. Quinn, and-" Finn groaned, running a hand through his hair. "Anyway, I just wanted to say I'm sorry! I shouldn't have put you in that position and I'm... I'm sorry Kurt. Really." Finn's face was full of self-loathing as he tried to turn away, but Kurt grabbed his arm, pulling him around to face him again.
"You need to decide what's more important to you" Kurt said quietly, his green eyes meeting Finns. "Your team, your popularity and your sport… Or your singing, your talent and more importantly; your friends--"
Kurt watched as his words sunk into the taller boy, before patting his arm companionably and turning towards the exit, biting in the words he longed to say.
'-- And me.'
