NEEDLEWORK

On the top of the lounger there are three neat pile of unused knitted garments. Thicker for the cold months of the winter and thinner for milder seasons. Summer headgear also has its own stack.

It's easy to see which are the oldest and most recent, because in the first works the loops are sometimes loose and sometimes stiffer and have no cut patterns. Subsequent techniques have been fine-tuned, and the loops are perfect. Some of the wool suits have a small horse knit pattern and some have stars. Most of the work is neutral in color, but some of the clothes are clearly made for a girl and others for a boy.

One woollen cardigan, bootees and mittens are missing from the pile, they are buried under the oak tree with their carrier. They could not bury their first-born to the cold ground without warm clothes. She came to the world too early, she was not ready.

After that event, all the clothes that had been ready, disappeared, they were removed from sight, and no new ones emerged in that room that was in the vicinity of the large bedroom. The door was closed, it had been open before.

After about a year, the door was opened and clothes appeared again.

Twice, these stacks have been found along floors, they had received grief, anger and frustration. But, they found their place again on the top of the dresser, folded with care.

Now that he has been asked to fetch a newborns cap, he looks at her wife's needlework with gentleness. He holds one of the first works in his hands that is a simple dark blue cap. He knows what his father would say - "That is too modest for the heir of Steward of Gondor. It should drift into luxury". He knows that this hat is made with love and dreams and is just right for his son.

His wife sees the cap which the fresh father chose and laughs. Why that, she asks. The man replies that it deserves to be used even though it is not her best job. It has waited so long and patiently for the bearer that it would be a shame to leave it unused. His wife is happy with the answer and nods. -Come on, give your heir to his crown.
