Tris POV:
As soon as I open my eyes, the morning sunlight streaming through my window almost blinds me. I slide out of bed and check my alarm clock on my bedside table that reads eight o'clock, I almost groan, but then, to my delight, I remember that today is Tobias' birthday. Christina, Marlene and I had been up well past midnight decorating for his surprise party last night, which may explain why I'm so tired this morning. I shuffle over to the bathroom to shower and change before heading down to the Dauntless cafeteria for breakfast. When I arrive, it seems that I was the last one up, because I am the last person of our group there.
"Hey Tris!" my friend Uriah says, motioning for me to come sit by him. I walk over to our usual table, plopping down between Uriah and my boyfriend Tobias, also known as Four to all other Dauntless members. He gives me a smile that makes me almost swoon, but then I catch myself. After dating for a year, he still makes me nervous sometimes. "Happy Birthday, Four." I say with a smile. "Thanks," he says almost shyly. I don't blame him, in Abnegation we don't celebrate birthdays. Even I'm still having trouble adjusting to the new ritual the Dauntless take great amusement in celebrating. Just then, Christina and Will exit the line and come sit down across from Tobias and I. Christina catches my eye and winks as she sits down, causing Tobias to stare at both of us with a strange look on his face. I just shrug and try to act like nothing is out of the ordinary. I almost have elbow Uriah in the ribs, who is not hiding our secret very well and has begun to chuckle.
We all quickly finish eating and decide to walk around the dauntless compound for a while, doing as Tobias suggests, since it is his birthday. As we stroll around, we see Lynn and Marlene walk up and join our outing. "Hey Tris, hey Christina. Want to go to Tori's shop with us? Lynn wants to get another tattoo." Marlene says. Christina and I nod, knowing this is all part of the plan to surprise Tobias. We wave goodbye to the guys and head in the direction of Tori's tattoo shop. We drop in to say hello and then head straight back out in the direction of Christina's apartment where we are having the party. We invited Tori too, so we are going to see her later anyway.
When we arrive at Christina's place, we all sit down at her kitchen table and talk about how much fun the party is going to be. We let other people who were invited to the party in and just have fun until we hear Will, Uriah, and Tobias walk up the steps. "Hide!" I excitedly exclaim as we all scramble to cover ourselves from the unsuspecting birthday boy. I dive behind the couch and crouch down beside Lynn until I hear the door fling open. As if meticulously practiced, we all leap out from behind our hiding places simultaneously and shout, "Surprise!". I laugh at the confused but delighted look on Tobias' face. "Did you do all of this?" he asks me as I run up to him and give him a kiss. "Christina, Marlene, Lynn, and the guys helped a ton too," I nod. He smiles and says, "Well, thanks all of you who did this for me. This is hands down the best birthday present I have ever gotten." And as he leans down to kiss me again, I can't help but think of how wonderful he is.
