We Belong Together- A Brathan Fan Fiction

Chapter One: Goodbyes are tough-

Nathan had not been at school for almost four days. After school Peyton and Brooke ride over to Nathan's apartment to see him. They knocked on the door, but there was no answer. Brooke twisted the door handle. The door was unlocked. The two friends entered and found that the apartment was a mess. There were empty pizza boxes, beer bottles, and trash strewed throughout.

Brooke looked around with a disgusted look on her face. She couldn't believe what she was seeing. Peyton started back the hallway, yelling for Nathan. The girls made their way back the hallway to the bedroom, only to find Nathan passed out on the floor in front of the bed. Peyton runs over to Nathan and shakes him attempting to see if he's conscious.

Nathan's eyes open slowly. He looks as if he is trying to figure out where he is. "Haley?" says Nathan as he sits up. Peyton notices the empty beer cans lying beside him on the floor. Peyton looks over at Brooke. "Nathan, how much did you drink last night?" asks Peyton. Nathan rubs his eyes and doesn't answer Peyton. Peyton looks at Brooke, but Brooke looks away and says nothing. "Nathan, you really need to get yourself together!" yelled Peyton. Nathan turned away with a disgusted look on his face. "You don't get it do you Brooke? There's no point! Haley's gone she's not coming back! My wife is not coming back," said Nathan with a look of defeat.

Peyton swallowed, it really pained her to see Nathan like this but she knew that coddling him wouldn't help the situation. "Nathan it's only for the tour, she will be back after that," said Peyton. "When she comes back we may not be together. It may not be the same," said Nathan. "Nathan you just…" said Peyton. She was interrupted by her cellphone that began ringing. She dug through her purse and pulled out her flip phone and answered.

"What? Okay, I will be right there," said Peyton into the phone. She shut the flip phone and then looked up at Brooke and Nathan. "I'm sorry guys I have to go, Jake needs me, something's going on with Jenny. Brooke, I will call you later," Peyton said as she grabbed her purse and headed for the front door. Peyton's footsteps faded and the front door slammed shut. Silence followed as Brooke bent down to Nathan's level on the floor.

"So Nate, what happened?" asked Brooke. Nathan looked at Brooke. "What do you mean?" he asked. "What happened with you and Haley? She just leaves with Chris and doesn't tell any of us?" said Brooke. Nathan slowly gets up and looks around the bedroom for his shirt. "I really just don't want to talk about it," Nathan said as he pulled on a Tree Hill basketball t-shirt. Nathan walked toward the kitchen. "Well you know you're going to have to talk about it sooner or later," said Brooke as she rummaged around under the sink looking for a trash bag. She finally found one and opened it, going around the apartment picking up all of the trash.

Finally, Nathan spoke. "When Haley said that she wanted to go on the tour, I told her that if she went, that we were done. The truth is I really didn't mean it. I never wanted her to leave. I love her and I wanted her to stay," said Nathan as his eyes filled with tears. Brooke dropped the bag of trash and ran over to Nathan who was still standing in the kitchen. She put her arms around him and he leaned on her shoulder and cried softly. Brooke had never seen Nathan so vulnerable and lost. She searched her mind for comforting words that she could give him.
"Oh, Nathan, everything is going to be fine. She is going to come home right after the tour. It will all be okay. Haley will do the right thing. Maybe she will come home early or something," said Brooke optimistically. "Have you heard from her?"

Nathan shook his head no and looked down at the ground. "No, not even a single phone call, e-mail or text and it has been almost four days."

Nathan broke their embrace and their eyes locked. Brooke swallowed and told Nathan that she was going to finish cleaning up the apartment. She went back in to the living room to pick up the trash bag.

"You know you didn't have to do that. Everyone's feeling sorry for me and I am sick of it," said Nathan as he opened the fridge to find something to drink. "Nathan, I am not doing this out of sympathy. I came over here because I care about you and I know you would do the same thing for me," said Brooke. "Do you think you will be at school tomorrow," she asked. Nathan opened his bottle of water and shook his head no. Brooke pursed her lips and then looked around the apartment with a satisfied look on her face. She forgot how efficiently she could clean in such a short amount of time.

"Okay, everything looks good here so I am going to head home," said Brooke as she grabbed her purse off the counter and headed toward the front door. Nathan started walking back toward his bedroom. "Brooke, wait," yelled Nathan. Brooke stopped and turned around. "Thank you," said Nathan. Brooke gave him a small smile, "no problem, Nate."
