Spinning, laughing, dancing to
her favorite song
A little girl with nothing wrong
Is all alone
Katie Bell ran out into her backyard, a lush wooded area behind the house she shared with her parents and her baby brother and all the family pets. The house was always loud now that the baby had been born. The blond nine year old loved her brother, but she also liked to play outside by herself among the flowers and the trees.
Katie's favorite spot in the yard was surrounded by trees. The grass was dark green and soft under her bare toes and the gentle breeze that came through the trees made her feel safe and let her imagination soar.
Eyes wide open
Always hoping for the sun
And she'll sing her song to anyone
that comes along
These woods were a place where Katie could pretend to be whatever she wished. That day, she was the queen of the fairies. Her little subjects danced around her feet; little blue and white fairies that glowed and flittered around on tiny wings.
One of Katie's dogs barked and the fairies twittered in alarm. They flew away and Katie cried out unhappily.
"No! Don't go!"
To her immense surprise the fairies stopped, frozen in place.
Katie stared at her little friends and moved closer to touch the creatures frozen in flight.
"Oh," she whispered.
The fairies broke free of the spell that had held them and chattered at Katie before flying away to hide in the trees.
Katie sat down on the grass and stretched herself out so that she could look up at the leaves in the trees above her. She was special, she realized. She had made those fairies stay that way, she was magical.
Crooked little smile on her face
Tells a tale of grace
That's all her own
Katie grinned suddenly and leapt up from the ground with a squeal. She had magic!
Laughing happily, Katie ran back to her house and sought out her mother.
"Mommy, guess what?" she yelled.
"What is it Katie?" her mother asked. Holding a crying baby in one arm and a warm bottle in another, she hardly glanced at her daughter.
"I have magic, mommy!"
"That's great, dear. Go play quietly now, I'm trying to get your brother to sleep."
Katie dashed outside again and hurried to her special place in the woods.
"I have magic," she whispered to herself.
A great happiness bubbled up inside her and she laughed aloud. Spinning herself around in wild circles, Katie grinned up at the sky.
"I have magic."

Two years later a letter arrived from a mysterious school in Scotland. When Katie had finished reading the letter her eyes glowed with happiness.
"I knew it."
