Make A Wish
The shadows taunted her as she passed, nervous of being caught. She was a good girl, and yet, not for the first time, she was sneaking out in the small hours of the morning to meet a boy she shouldn't ever have even looked at.
She knows all this, and yet she does it anyway, because for some reason she cannot stop herself from liking him. From wanting him.
"I thought you were going to bail on me," he murmured the moment she stepped into the dimly lit room at the height of the Astronomy Tower. It was a risky meeting place, many of the schools couples tended towards it, citing it as 'romantic.'
Shaking her head, she offered him a shaky smile. "Professor McGonagall was patrolling close to the tower. It took me a while to get past her."
"I'm impressed, Red. Not too long ago, you'd have chickened out."
Scowling, Lily cast Lumos to help her make her way across to the window ledge he sat at. The last time she'd tried to cross without a light aid, she'd almost fallen flat on her face. As soon as she was in reach, he wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her forward until she was leaning into the circle his arms made.
"I missed you, Red."
Nuzzling his neck briefly, she nodded. "I missed you too. I just..."
"I get it. We can't be public. I can only imagine the reaction, and besides," he pressed his lips to her temple, "I like have this to myself. I like having you to myself."
They settled into an easy silence, Regulus pressing kisses against her skin at random intervals while she simply enjoyed his presence. He was calming for her, he brought a sense of peace and tranquillity. No matter that she knew they were heading for opposite sides of the same war, Lily felt content in Regulus' arms in a way she'd never felt before.
"A shooting star. Make a wish, Lily."
Thought she knew it was childish to believe that wishes on stars could ever come true, she did as he bid her, praying with all her might for him to come out of the coming battles unscathed. While she knew that what they had couldn't last, she didn't want him to come to any harm. She cared about him.
"I got you something."
She looked up at him, leaning back so she could see his face. "Why?"
"Just because."
Pulling a long box from his pocket, he handed it to her. She took it, hoping that he didn't notice the slight tremble in her hand as she did so. Opening the box, she found a long silver chain, a dainty star hanging off the end. Looking at him quizzically for an explanation, he gave her a wry smile.
"I bought it so you'd always remember me. We both know we're almost at the end. It's spring, you'll be leaving soon. Just... don't forget me, Red."
Turning around, she handed the necklace to him to put around her neck. Once it was hidden, she turned back.
"I won't forget you, Reg," she promised. "You get out of it alive if you can, you hear me?"
"I hear you. I promise I'll try."
Unsatisfied with the answer, but knowing he couldn't give her a better one, Lily nodded, kissing him chastely. "We have a few months yet. Don't say goodbye too soon."
