Gone
As I look out of the palace window towards the endless mountains; never once stopping to let me catch up and discover the endless secrets behind them. Instead they laugh, teasing me about my selfish heart and commending him for his loyalty. Yes, it hurts, but they were right.
Never once had I had a servant as loyal as him. I always thought he was here for the money, but then I remembered; he wasn't even paid. He should be in my place, leading the people to a prosperous life. I am nothing, all I have is a title, king, he has the quality to become one, not me. I haven't even realized it until now.
Always, I thought of him a as a servant that trips over his feet more times then I can remember, that can never be on time and can't fight even if it is for his own life. "I am happy to be your servant till the day I die" was what he expresses, but never in a thousand years would I have believed it. He is servant, he has no power. He is incompetent and will never succeed in life. I am the king, I have rights. I am the one that holds this kingdom together is what I always thought but was I wrong.
As I looked out that December night, I knew I was a coward. I knew that all I have is because of him, the respect and loyalty. I don't know how a mere servant changed me but he did and now…. he's gone.
I can still see it, the ambush of people coming out from behind me. Their swords raised high in the air, trying to claim my life, so I did what I knew best, I fought. I fought for my people and my land, but he fought harder. As I thought it was over, the quiet chill air looming over me, an arrow was shot and all I saw was a blur… and him. His face was filled with fear but determined not to let me die.
Blood, all I saw was blood consuming his clothes until the very end. As I picture him, all I see is a loyal friend that would do anything to keep me safe and I failed to return that favor. Now he is gone. My best friend, my most trusted ally is gone. His name…..Merlin
