Chapter 1: Jack
This is sort of crappy, but I'm new to this so please go easy on me!
Lily didn't know how she got here, but she knew she cared for this boy and didn't want to see him hurt. She hadn't known him long at all before she felt the need to protect him. She sensed that a lot of people felt this way towards him. She didn't care, she shook her thoughts away and continued to show him how to use the controller.
One week earlier…
Lily Clarke had arrived at NYU, for her move in day.
Her dad had passed away about two years ago from a heart attack and her mom had been a mess ever since. She took care of her mom and was glad she was an only child so no one else had to go through what she did. She didn't have the time to mourn her dad because she was too busy helping her mom.
She took a deep breath and crossed the street to her new home. She had a backpack on her back, a duffel bag in her hand and a pillow under her arm. She gazed up at the extremely tall building and then back at her badge that hung on a lanyard that she had been handed moments ago. She was nervous but put a smile on her face and stepped forward to the very intimidating building. She scanned her badge and with a beep she opened the door and went through. The place wasn't exactly impressive, but she was hopeful. She waited a few minutes for the elevator to ding open and she got on. She clicked the 14th floor button and sighed. She was glad she got the elevator to herself as she knew there would be people piling in soon.
She got off the elevator and wandered to her room. She put headphones on and "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley started playing. She smiled as the music filled her ears and started dancing a bit down the hall. There was no one around and she was finally feeling excited. She worked her ass off to get here and she wasn't letting it go without taking it all in. She started twirling around and closing her eyes as she made her way down. By the time she reached the door to her shared room she was lip syncing.
She unlocked her door and opened it to find two twin beds, two identical desks, two closets, and two matching nightstands. She knew what it looked like by the pictures on the school website and wasn't disappointed. She took the set nearest the window and away from the door. She was assigned this one and wasn't even sure if she would be sharing. So far, according to the school, she was by herself. She dropped her stuff and started playing Panic at the Disco's "Hallelujah". She started to dance around the room. She wasn't a good or bad dancer, she was just enjoying the music and herself. She noticed out of the corner of her eye that someone was in her doorway and immediately froze. She lowered her headphones and turned around to face them.
She saw a shaggy blonde hair boy standing in the doorway, leaning up against the frame. He had a white tee on with blue jeans, a light brown jacket and white sneakers. He had a crinkled-up smile looking at her with his arms crossed.
"Don't stop on my account." He said, smile never leaving his face.
Her headphones hung around her neck and she tried to keep her cheeks from flaming red.
"I, uh, well…" She stammered and cursed herself for it.
"Well, I'll leave you to it." He said. He went to leave and turned back to smile at her, tap the door frame and left.
She immediately went and closed the door even though it was way too late. She turned back to her stuff and started unpacking.
She didn't bring much. Clothes filled her duffel bag, her gaming supplies and laptop were in her backpack and then it was just her favorite pillow. The school supplied everything else because she had it ordered ahead of time. Things like bedding and hygiene products. She sent up her laptop and put away her clothes before heading out. She had a mission the first day she was here, and she had saved some money away for it. She wanted a flat screen Tv because even though she knew it would obliterate her potential social life, she needed her entertainment.
That first day at the college had been somewhat successful in her mind. Her stuff arrived from the store, she had a good set up in her room, bought a beautiful Tv and even saw a cute boy. Correction humiliated herself in front of a cute boy. At least she didn't see him again that day. She kind of hoped she never would.
She didn't get a roommate and with classes starting tomorrow, she didn't think that would change. Her classes consisted of all computer engineering courses, she was pretty good at that already, but she wanted a degree to show for it. It was a four-year program, but she wanted to get out in about half that time. She knew that it'd be a lot of work, but she was motivated, and nothing would get in her way.
She knew that the school had social events lined up that first week for the freshman like herself, but she didn't want to go. So, each night she stayed in, studied and played video games. She didn't need more socialization than what she got in the classroom and the library. She liked her time alone and even though the first week was stressful and lonely, she found herself getting more comfortable after that.
She was heading up from doing laundry in the basement when the elevator dinged at the 11th floor. It opened and she couldn't believe her eyes.
"Going up?" He said with a smirk.
It was him. The boy from the first day that she felt so embarrassed in front of.
"Mhm, yep." She said. She tried to act like she had no idea who he was. She didn't have her headphones with her, and her hair was up instead of down, so she was hoping he didn't remember.
"My name's Jack." He said, holding out his hand for her to take.
"Lily." She said, taking his hand and shaking it quickly.
"Do people still do that?" He asked her when the elevator dinged on their floor.
"Do what?" She asked as they stepped out.
"Shake hands."
"Oh, uh, I'm not sure to be honest. I don't meet a whole lot of people." She looked down.
He tilted his head to follow hers, "Fair enough."
She smiled and started walking down the hall, towards her room. He was heading the same way, keeping up with her pace, clearly not done talking.
"So, Lily, what song were you listening to when we first met?" He gave her a side glance.
So, he remembered, big deal.
"Panic at the Disco." She kept it short.
"I've never heard that one." He said, looking confused.
They got to her door and he stood there waiting. She didn't know for what.
"Well, this is me then. It was nice to meet you, Jack." She opened the door, but he wouldn't walk away.
"Want to hang out?" He asked and she almost felt bad. Almost. He was being kind of creepy.
"Uh, no I don't think so. Have a good day." And with that she shut the door and locked it.
She enjoyed the work this school was giving her. It had been about two weeks since she started, and she kept busy. She didn't make many friends, none to hang out with outside of class, which she was fine with. She was busy anyways. The only part of her days that weren't predictable were the elevator rides she took. She would usually run into Jack and they would exchange pleasantries before splitting off to go back to their ways.
Today was different, he didn't keep to their formalities as usual, and it kept her on her feet.
"Hey, Lily, can I ask you something?" He turned to her as soon as he got on it and it made her jump slightly.
"Uh, yeah, sure, what's up?" She had no idea where this was going.
They always talked about light things like what their majors are, his is history, and how their classes were going. They rarely branched out from that.
"Well, I don't really know anyone here and I was wondering if you'd want to do something later? I understand you're probably busy or find me…off putting. I've just been wanting to ask." He looked away from her, clearly not used to being so open with people. He looked like he wanted to take it back. She smiled at his sincerity and shyness.
"Well what would we do?" She asked, keeping it hypothetical.
"Honestly, all I do is read and go to class. What do people do for fun?" He still didn't look at her because he was a little embarrassed for not knowing what sounded cool.
"I usually play video games or watch tv. Sometimes I go to the gym but that's only a few times a week and I would not call it fun. I don't do much besides school." She noticed that she started to ramble and cut herself off. Him being open with her must've triggered this or something. It was her turn to get red.
He turned to her with a smile on his face.
"That sounds interesting, I would like to enjoy all of those things with you." He kept the smile on his face and didn't look away.
She smiled slightly at his eagerness.
"Okay, yeah, cool. Honestly, I'm surprised you want to hang out with me." She said this as the elevator dinged open and they headed to her room.
"Why do you say that?" He looked utterly confused next to her walking down the hallway.
"Well, I'm not outgoing, I'm average looking at best, and I am pretty much a loner. Not exactly a recipe for a friendship." She was being brutally honest about herself, but it didn't really hurt. She knows who she is and she's not apologizing for it, she's just not expecting to get anything from it. She nodded to herself.
"You don't see what I do I guess." He said simply as they approached her door and she unlocked it.
"What do you mean?"
They went in and she went to the tv stand to set up the system and add another controller.
"I don't care if you're outgoing or not. You are much better looking than you think, clearly. And as for the loner thing? That's a choice. Maybe you like your alone time and that's completely fine, you don't owe anyone your time. You are kind enough to share your activities with me and honestly, I couldn't be happier about it. Now, how does this work?"
She gaped at him as she handed him the controller and they both sat on the bed next to each other.
"The controller?" She finally spat out.
"Yes, this." He held it up to her.
He smiled to her and she started to show him how to use it. He was so focused on what she was saying, not wanting to forget anything she was telling him.
They started playing and everything just fell into place.
They would go to class separately and meet up at around four each day. They would go to the gym, which he had never been to, and she would show him how to use the equipment. He would watch her use it and then try it out himself. They would race and compete to keep up with each other. After the gym they would grab dinner and bring it back to her room and watch a movie or they'd hang out in the field.
She was hesitant to sit in the field because nobody did that, and she didn't want to draw attention. This hesitation was soon squashed when he started running around and playing stupid games with her. They would throw their food into each other's mouths and run around playing tag. They acted like children when they were outside by themselves and they didn't care who was watching.
After they ate, they would help each other study for a couple of hours and then play video games or watch a movie if they hadn't earlier. Every movie she suggested he hadn't seen, it was like she was introducing him to movies in general. He would be quiet the whole movie in order to take it in and then have questions or comments at the end. She found she loved having a new friend.
After about a month and a half they had become extremely close to each other. He knew about her dad and how she still hadn't processed because of her mom. She knew about his dads and how the situation was quite messy. Well she knew most of it. They both had a few things they couldn't share with anyone and they were fine with that. They were extremely comfortable with each other. He would sleep over in her room sometimes, using the empty bed that was never filled by a roommate. He knew when she needed to be alone and he respected that, leaving to do something on his own. She appreciated him even more for that. When someone asked her out in class she went back to her room, where she knew he'd be waiting since he texted her that he'd be early with the phone she helped him get, to tell him the news.
"Jack, oh my god, guess what?" She said, with a smile on her face.
He was sitting on her bed with a game ready to play and looked at her as she plopped down next to him.
"What am I supposed to guess?" He looked at her confused and smiling.
"Never mind! I got asked out by Peter." She looked at him and his smile grew.
"I'm so happy for you! This is amazing!" He dropped the controller onto the bed and gave her a big hug.
"Yes! He wants to go on Friday night at eight, is that okay?" She looked at him feeling a bit guilty.
"Don't worry about me! Do you want me to be with you before you leave? To help? There's always someone there in the movies to help the person get ready." He looked at her and was proud of what he had learned.
"Yeah that sounds great! Thanks, Jack." She gave him another hug before they went about playing games.
Friday morning came and Jack texted her that he was sick and probably wouldn't be able to make it to the pre-date party. She held back her disappointment when she replied because she was honestly looking forward to hanging out before the date than the actual date.
Peter was a nice enough guy, he was intelligent, attractive, and creative.
They talked about everything from school to religion to politics and everything in between. He was thrown back when she told him she was an atheist. He made some comments about it and she was insulted. She ended up asking him to take her home early because her friend was sick. He complied and they both knew there wouldn't be a second date.
She went back to her room and turned on the lights. She found Jack sitting on her bed with his head hung low.
"Jack? Is something wrong? Why are you sitting in the dark?" She kneeled in front of him and put a hand on his knee. She shook it to get his attention.
"Lily, I'm sorry." He started to bite back tears and he didn't move.
"Jack, what's wrong?" She kept knelt and searched his face for answers.
"I wasn't sick." He choked out.
"Okay. That's okay. Did something happen?"
"I lied to you. And I'm so sorry." A tear went down his cheek and she wiped it with her hand.
"Is that all this is about? It's no big deal, why did you tell me you're sick though?"
"I had to help my family and I'm not allowed to say more. I told them I hate to lie, and they told me it comes with the territory," He looked into her eyes and she smiled. "Why are you smiling?"
"It's sweet that you felt so guilty about lying. Everybody's got secrets. I don't even want to call them secrets. There are things we're not allowed to share with anyone, and it sucks to not be open completely. There's everything else though. Like the fact I can tell you my date sucked." She chuckled as she said this, and he looked concerned.
"What happened?"
"Eh, apparently, not believing in a god is a deal breaker. Who knew? Well, everybody I guess."
"You don't believe in God?" He looked personally hurt.
"Oh, dude, I don't care if you do, it doesn't change anything!"
"There's a God. Believe me." He looked at her like he would die if she didn't believe.
"I didn't know you were so religious." She smirked, trying to lighten the mood.
"Sorry, I just have personal experience."
If ya wanna review it, that'd be nice! Otherwise, thanks for reading it and I hope y'all enjoyed it!
